PANAMA CITY, Fla. -- A substitute teacher was arrested Wednesday on charges he allegedly had sex with a 17-year-old student in his classroom, officials said.

Cornelius Campbell, 23, was charged with first-degree sexual battery, a felony. He was freed later Wednesday on bond from Bay County Jail.

Campbell, a substitute English teacher, does not have a listed telephone number in Panama City or surrounding areas. He could not be reached for comment, and it was unknown when he would next appear in court or if he had retained an attorney.

"The words that come to mind are shocked, surprised, disappointed and angry," Bay High School principal Fred Goodwin told The News Herald of Panama City for its Thursday editions. "With the accent on angry."

Campbell and the girl both told officials they engaged in consensual sex on April 22 during a lunch period. Officials also believe the two exchanged sexually explicit e-mails, a charge Campbell denied, according to investigators who received the e-mails from the girl's foster mother.

Campbell is not being allowed to continue teaching until the situation is resolved.

"I am just deeply saddened that this happened," Bay County Superintendent James McCalister said. "Certainly we are going to put into place procedures so that it does not happen on our campuses again."

I had my teaching license at 20 and was subbing in classrooms with 17 and 18 year olds. There was some tempting eye candy but I didn't even flirt with them. You need to respect the job.

Actually, you could probably be charged with something even if they were 18 considering you are in a position of power over them (teacher) and it could be argued that you have exploited that power.

Anyway, the different between the average high school senior and the average college junior is pretty big. Think of how much you matured between 6th grade and high school.
