cool1 05-06-2004 06:08 AM

I don't think any painting is worth that much cash.
But there are some stupid rich people out there who do stupid things with thier cash.

NickPapageorgio 05-06-2004 06:13 AM

Agree totally with you there. It's worth every penny.
I own several paintings worth £35,000+ each, and although small fry compared to Picasso or other great names, I would rather have these to look at every day than sell a few and buy another Porsche.

Monet, Picasso, and other great impressionists are worth the money because they are so great. Owners will never loose money over investing in them, and $104 million is small change the the people that won the auction.

Lemme just check my bank account.

Hmm... perhaps a bubble gum joe cartoon would look nice on my wall instead.

Corleone 05-06-2004 06:20 AM

its a picasso

if i'd be a billionaire i'd buy it :)

doornx 05-06-2004 06:27 AM

i would prefer somethin i love to look at...for that money i would buy a few original warhol's :Graucho

maybe even a lichtenstein or De Kooning...:2 cents:

who are living in poverty yes..but having nothing to eat for days and having to walk a zillion miles for water ....not really

Kenny B! 05-06-2004 06:41 AM

That's one pricey peice of canvas, what I wonder will it go in a vault or on a wall! If the buyer puts it on his wall or in his collection to admire then it is worth it for him.

Some people have way too much money, bastards:-)

It might sound mean or whatever, but it's survival of the fittest. That's what happens to an area that can't sustain it's population. And suppose you don't believe that, that's ok, most foreign aid ends up in the hands of corrupt government officials, so sending money to Africa is a huge waste, since most of the people never see the money or any benefits.

Poverty is all relative..

I wouldn;'t say people have it JUST as bad, last time I checked there were more people dying of starvation, aids & civil war in Africa than in the rest of the world put together :2 cents:

make sure you donate it to the right organisations or set up your own fund..

I understand that a lot of money is also being spend on salleries (people who work there need some income too ofcourse)
, but if everybody has that attitude nothing will change for the better

These people need to be educated as well in order to "sustain it's population" if i may quote you on that one

Ron-AWE 05-06-2004 06:52 AM

If I had $104 million i would share it with the poor

I am really glad that we're talking about this in a civil manner (Not sarcasm, I can't remember when the last time was a debate of any kind went on for more than one post without childish namecalling and accusations). Anyway, I would never send a dime of my money to Africa. Just because I see war veterans who have come back after serving this country who now have nothing. I see homeless people sleeping on the beach and on bus benches in Waikiki every night. Sure, maybe some of them are alcoholics or drug addics that are that way because of their own malfeasance, but it is my belief that once you help people over here who could actually contribute something to society, then eventually others will be better off as well. I mean, so you help some people from Africa, then what? Africa does not really contribute anything to anyone, at least in America people could get back on their feet and get jobs that will produce something that will eventually benefit society. Sorry if I was rambling, it's late here. :)

You think that's bad?

Check out the US Treasury's "Debt To The Penny" page.

This number blows my mind.

You're right on that. The dictators that run the countries down there scoop up the aid money and send it to their Swiss banks.

I don't think the impoverished parts of Africa are saveable. You have terrible agriculture, so you can' t even grow food there.

They really need to relocate the population.

stev0 05-06-2004 07:25 AM

hell no

bopha 05-06-2004 07:48 AM

Buying a painting has nothing to do with poverty. If you spend 100 bucks on a concert someone could argue that you could have fed 40 hungry people.

If you want to help then send all your money to charity.

Many people who are wealthy donate to charity and buy paintings. I don't see how one has anything to do with the other.

jungar 05-06-2004 08:05 AM

It's a genuine Picasso! Market value is determined in part by what people will pay for it. If someone is willing to pay that kind of money for it, then that's what it worth.

I would bet that the value goes up over time; its a pretty solid investment.

Some authentic monet oil paintings are valued at similar prices.

it's one thing to say something is worth $104 million or $90 million or $450 million. but if the item never sells for that price, it's worth sweet fuck all.

jhauser 05-06-2004 09:24 AM

I wouldnt want to be in charge of moving the painting.. If it gets ruined its not like you can replace it.

100%. That's exactly what I am talking about, when assessing something's value, a large component of is what people are willing to pay for it.

Think of the stock market. When the price of a stock fluctuates, its not because the companies' assets fluctuate (usually), the price fluctuation is a reflection of demand, of what people are willing to pay for it.

jungar 05-06-2004 09:35 AM

Not only does the buyer get the prestige the super wealthy are so concerned with, it's also an extremely safe investment guaranteed to go up in the long term.
