Mountain Bike Question:

Mountain Bikes ? I am going to start to ride a bike 3-4 miles to the gym in the morning then ride it back. I don?t know a damn thing about bikes. Can someone please give me information on what I should look for? Any links or examples of current bikes would be greatly appreciated. Any guides to mountain biking? Someone said ebay has great days.

all depends on what you want to spend and how hard you want to ride .

get a trek if you are a cheap mofo and just gonna ride it down paved paths

I have had the same trek mountain bike since 94. I ride 99.9 percent on the road. I highly recommed a TREK with "street" tires on it ! Also, I'd go with new because with used, you never know whats waiting to break on it...

My boyfriend w r i t es mountain biking guidebooks, and he says, whatever you do, don't buy your bike at Wal-Mart! Some brands he recommends are Gary Fischer, Marin, Trek, Specialized, and best of all Kona. These are all good quality and reliable and have nice entry-level models available. You should be able to get a decent bike for $250-$400 that will be a basic bike with no suspension, which isn't really necessary for road riding. Front suspension (which is a good investment if you plan on doing any trail riding) between $450 and $650.

Not in your area, but check out my bf's site, www.mountainbikenewmexico.com which has a discussion forum where you can ask technical questions. Another good site to check out is www.bikemojo.com - a really active forum where you should be able to get advice on pretty much anything related to mountain biking.

Is Mongoose a good brand? Also, I don't mind spending 400 - 600 on a good bike. Anyone else?

Wanna sell it for 500? I won't be spending that much on a bike I can assure you.

Hey - bf says Mongoose quality has gone downhill in the past few years. Not one he'd really recommend, just his opinion though. The brand that everyone's hot about in the $400-$600 price range this year is Kona. He works with a lot of different bike shops and all seem to agree on this.

Yo,

I was gonna say, if you're mainly riding in the city / suburbs and the biggest air you'll hit will be curbs, a Walmart bike will be fine. No need to go overkill if you don't plan to go off big drops / over rocks / jumps / etc.

Go with a Walmart bike or something. I had a bike from our version "Canadian Tire" for the longest time and it was actually a great bike.
