i used to love watching dads army...

it is one of those shows that is so essential to UK pop-culture that you can't even understand some phrases used in everyday language unless you have seen the show.

oh and some Americans that had Nickelodean early on might be interested to know that the lead actor in this show was also the voice of Danger Mouse

"A Royal Flush" was on last week... one of my absolute favourite episodes ever. I almost shit myself laughing when everyone was having a pop at Del in the Opera House, and when he turned up at the clay pigeon shoot with a borrowed sawn off shotgun.

I suppose everything is debatable To me, though, Fawlty Towers is arguably the <I>world's</I> best comedy series with Blackadder right behind. The only other series that holds up to Fawlty Towers and Blackadder, in my opinion, is Married... With Children but they are so different as to make comparison almost impossible.

Blackadder is a work of comedic art but a bit high brow on some level for mass public appeal. Fawlty Towers is brilliant. However, Only fools and Horses was going (and still in in the form of christmas specials) for more episodes than both of them combined. So, it is a matter of being able to maintain both popularity and quality over such a long time period.

Though, I don't think it compares to Red Dwarf or even Yes Minister (or Yes Prime Minister) or even Drop The Dead Donkey.

I don't know that the number of episodes is necessarily related to how good the show is. Fawlty Towers only made twelve episodes but I don't think that means a show that made 500 is better; just longer What I mean is that Fawlty Towers ended because it ended, not because it wasn't good enough to keep going. I've always been disappointed that are not more than a dozen episodes of Fawlty Towers but at least they went out on a high note. Many shows linger around well past their prime but every single episode of Fawlty Towers was genius from beginning to end.

One of the things I like about Blackadder is that they made a lot of episodes. Red Dwarf I like but I have actually listened to more episodes as audiobooks and radio theater than I have watched on TV. I am not familiar with the other two shows you listed but I do like "Are You Being Served".
