crap. Webpages are always designed for 1024x786, therefor the best thing is your screen is also in this resolution. 95% of the users surf in 1024 or higher...thats rule #1 of webpage designing...

But you should design it so that It will come out correct when any viewer, of any screen resolution can see the page correctly. Rule #2 of designing ;)

True, you can design for 800x600 without setting your resolution to 800x600.

actually, you're wrong on all accounts.

most people here with heavy traffic would agree that a hell of a lot of surfers are still surfing at 800x600. some would say it's at 50/50.

right now, the number one rule of web design is still to design for 800x600.

go to any popular site. you'll see they're designed for 800x600.

www.cnn.com
www.yahoo.com
www.microsoft.com
www.google.com
etc.

Read my post. A good designer can design it to work with all resoultions. :2 cents:

screen resolution has nothing to do with PC performance.

i have an old 14 inch color monitor. whether i hook it up to a 486 or a P4 3.02 GHz, i still won't be able to see very well at 1024x768.

and very many older people surf at 800x600 because it's easier on their eyes. i know people with 17 inch LCDs who surf at 800x600.

I say no. I observed my stat of my and others people's websites for a long time (e.g. with extreme tracking)...the result was always the same. I copied the stats of my site, have a look:
Res
1024x768 | 99646 | 53.88%

800x600 | 45838 | 24.78%

1280x1024 | 21362 | 11.55%

1152x864 | 10338 | 5.59%

Other | 4010 | 2.16%

1600x1200 | 2998 | 1.62%

640x480 | 743 | 0.40%

btw. it makes no sence to second your arugument with sites like microsoft or search engines...can't you imagine how people with 800x600 would feel fucked when they can't surf to those basic sites??

petepete 05-03-2004 01:18 AM

My sig is not cool but I'm not going to change it for some reason :)

you said 95% were surfing at 1024x768 or higher.

your stats prove you wrong. 25% of your surfers are at 800x600. 33% of SomeCreep's surfers are at 800x600.

that's 1/4 and 1/3 respectively. that's more than enough reason to design for 800x600. i wouldn't want 1/4 or 1/3 of my surfers not being able to view my site properly.

and my argument with popular sites stands. it's not like surfers who go to yahoo/cnn/microsoft never come to our sites or vice versa.

those popular sites design for 800x600 for one reason: a significant amount of surfers are still at 800x600.

Ok anyways, back to my cool sig! :winkwink:

Goose 05-03-2004 01:40 AM

I have never trouble with surfers of 800x600 you know why? They can watch my site perfectly, because I programed it with 1024 (because they are the majority, as you agreed) but didn't use the whole space from left to right. I put it in the middle and so a surfer with lesser resolutions are able to watch my site in its full extend, only shifted a little.
And this is the silver bullet...perhaps it was a misunderstanding.

Jace 05-03-2004 01:51 AM

yeah, that was way wrong

1. 800 x 600 51.7 %
2. 1280 x 1024 20.0 %
3. 1024 x 768 20.0 %
4. >= 1600 x 1200 5.0 %

from today

hmm strange how that differs...anyway as long as everybody goes best with his website/users we're fine...
