SE Gurus:How can I find which keywords I have a good chance of getting top placement?

well, if I search google for a certein (not too big) term, what's the best way to know if I can get a top placement if I optimize right, and get some pr4 and 5 incoming links?
Is it by looking at the current top sites' back links and see if there are few? Or by looking at their PR?

share your tips...

You can actually get high rankings for single term keywords if you constantly update and focus a lot of your methods on building the website. I've always recommended, to clients, friends, whoever, that the best way to go about optimizing and ranking is to go for lesser populated keywords. Sure, you won't get as many hits for "purple 15 inch dildo" as you would for the term "15 inch dildo" or even for "dildo", but when you aim specifically for less popular terms, and add them together, you can increase your traffic like crazy. For the longrun, the more keywords you rank well for, the better acquainted you get with the optimization process, and the better you'll do as time goes by for harder keywords.

For keyword analysis, check out the Overture keyword tool - http://inventory.overture.com/d/sear...ry/suggestion/

Also, there's WordTracker and GoogleAdwords tool. WordTracker is subscriber based, but a very good and extremely in-depth tool (especially great for ppc campaigns).

Hope this helps.
