Are you actually looking to actually *invest* it? Whatever you do, set a little aside for a "rainy day." Its always a good idea to have some cash (or some other highly liquid investment) for emergencies.

Unless you can come up with a really good plan for that 7K to invest (I can't think of anything for that amount), then for your situation I would really suggest putting it into a stable money market account that pays slightly more than the average savings.

Wrong time to buy REITs. Look at a recent chart for the DJ US RE index and the Morgan Stanley REIT index. The threat of rising interest rates will generally impact REITs negatively. Unless you feel like calling the bottom on this one, I'd sit out for a few.
