Sergeant: NYPD Video Cops Are Sex Spies

April 26, 2004 -- Some cops in the Police Department's video surveillance Viper Units have used their cameras to spy on tenants having sex in city housing projects when they should have been on the lookout for criminal activity, a self-described whistleblower charged yesterday.

Sgt. John Marchisotto, a 12-year NYPD veteran, claimed that officers working the late shift turned the assignment into a "private blockbuster pornographic show," but also killed time by watching rented movies.

But Marchisotto said his effort to alert supervisors to problems in the Viper Unit - squads assigned to use video cameras to watch for crime in city housing projects - only made him the target of "numerous acts of retaliation."

At a press conference organized by 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, Marchisotto called the Viper unit a "dumping ground" for cops with disciplinary problems and said that cops routinely mishandled videotapes, fabricated log books, and used the cameras "to watch residents have sex."

The NYPD declined to comment on Marchisotto's allegations.

Heh, looking at the quality of that taped suicide on CJ, it doesn't look like it would be too hard to fake some of that footage on your own, and create one helluva an uproar over really steamy sex from NYC apartments making its way onto the internet.

Just a thought.
