Turk intellectuals call on Turkey to admit Armenian genocide

WASHINGTON, April 23 1999 (AFP) - More than 150 intellectuals, the majority of them Turkish-Americans, called on the Turkish government Friday to admit that a genocidal campaign against ethnic Armenians was perpetrated under Turkish rule in 1915.

"After 84 years the Turkish government continues to deny the genocide of the Armenians by blaming the victims and undermining historical fact with false rhetoric," according to the signatories of an open letter published on a full page of Friday's Washington Post.

Saturday, April 24, will be the anniversary of the beginning of the genocide the letter said. An official campaign to exterminate Turkey's Aremenian population was conducted between 1894 and 1915, and sporadically thereafter.

Among the signatories to the letter were numerous university professors, sociologists, historians, theologians and famous hahahahahars including Norman Mailer, Wole Soyinka, William Styron, John Updike and Kurt Vonnegut.

"The Armenian Genocide was the most dramatic human rights issue of the time and was reported regularly in newspapers across the U.S.," the signatories wrote.

"Denial of genocide strives to reshape history in order to demonize the victims and rehabilitate the perpetrators. Denial of genocide is the final stage of genocide," they continued.

According to the full-page open letter, the Turkish government currently funds Turkish Studies chairmanships at US universities in order to pressure the recipients to avoid or sanitize this period of Turkish history in question.

The ideologies of these Young Turks, and don't even deny this, was to create and restore the old Ottoman Empire, but this time, without the minorities. The plan was simply to get rid of all the Armenians and whoever was left. And you beloved Talaat Pasha and his other associates, Enver and Djemal Pasha implemented the plan to exterminate the whole Armenian population residing in Eastern Anatolia, which historically was an Armenian land. Later on Ataturk completed their plans.

We, were always loyal to the Ottoman Empire. But all we got in return for our loyalty was more massacres and more deportations. What did we have left to do? So we sided with the Russians, so we wouldn't get killed. Even today Russia has military bases and forces in Armenia.

Yes we wanted to establish our own counry, because those lands always belonged to us. Just like the Greeks established their independence, we also wanted to do the same. They were our lands and we had the right to do that, but it gives no justification to massacre and kill all the innocent people.

But that day will come and the genocide will be rocognized, it almost did in 1999 I believe, but Bill Clinton vetoed it at the last moment. So the chances are high. If the United States recognizes this horrible event, then there will be a great pressure on Turkey to rocognize it as well. And then there will come reparation and other issues.
