Has anyone been to Egypt

Anyone here (American or Canadian) been to Egypt lately? I'd like to make a trip to the pyramids one day, but now is not a great time for an American to be in that area and I don't know if it's only going to get worse. If you were there lately, was it very safe or what?

I would think staying out of that whole region would be the most prudent thing at this time

unless you look Arab, or anything other than american..

It's been 5 years since I was there. We got all sorts of warnings going over then. It was a businses trip and we had protective security most of the time. Beautiful country. We were in Sharm el Sheik (sp?) not Cairo.

I was there in January 2000 and it was fine back then.

Tourism is Egypt's lifeblood. They need that foreign currency rolling in to compensate for the fact that 90% of their land is sand.

There was one massacre back a decade or so ago where a bunch of tourists were killed but I think they have beefed up security a bit since then.

Anyway, don't let all this terrorism bullshit stop you from living your life. I mean, you're just going to check out some pyramids and sphinxes and shit. My advice is to keep a low profile and tell everyone you're Canadian.

I visited Egypt 5 years ago, nice place to do shopping and stuff, the museum in Cairo had lots of great pieces to see. The pyramids were impressive but nothing special in my opinion.

I visited it long ago and it was the worst country I've visited but hey it could've changed now.

Is it dangerous? No, I don't think so. Lots of tension now in Egypt but no danger.

I've been to enough countries to completely fill a passport but I have yet to go to Egypt. I'm looking forward to a day where I can got there without getting shot. The country is certainly high on my list.

I have always wanted to see the pyramids too but I dont think its wise right now to take a trip there.. maybe in a few yrs hopefully things will be settled down by then...
Such an interesting and amazing place , the pyramids and all of that..I've always thought about how the United States isnt as interesting in terms of history when compared to Europe or the Middle East...
We have the Native Americans and all of that here but no Kings , Queens and mysterious tribes and civilizations.I kind of wonder why about that sometimes.. why didnt we have any of that stuff here? Even Mexico(and thats next to california) had the Mayans..

You will be fine there. Anytime I'm in a non-American friendly country I tell people I am from Canada. They always buy it and then we make fun of Americans for a minute. Hey, it's better than a beating or a bullet.

I would suggest finding a few Egyptian dishes that you like before you go.

A friend of mine went to Cairo a few years ago. Apparently he went wandering around the city on foot, looking for a cafe that he'd read about. He got lost and ended up in a bad neighborhood.

He was then pulled into a house against his will, and held there against his will. They didn't speak any english, so he had no clue what was up. The occupants then made a phone call, and held him there. A few minutes later, they brought him outside to a waiting cab. The cabbie asked him in broken english what his hotel was. He told him, and got a free ride back to his hotel. The cabbie told him to stick with his tour group and not wander in Cairo, as he'd get killed.

So he thought he was being abducted, but the folks who grabbed him really were doing him a huge favor by getting him off the streets.

That must have been one hell of a strange trip! But as an American, unfortunately there's no way in hell I'd go there right now.
