Life 'worse' for Iraqi women

Post all because Washington Times is subscriber based....

For the reading impaired, read the bold

Quote:

...

The most fashionable color in the capital these days is black, as the desire for anonymity and the resurgence of conservative Islam combine to force women into conformity.

"Life has changed for the worse," said Bushra Mahmoud, 40, a mother of three who was sitting in the waiting area. "There is a creeping zealousness among men and women that is really frightening. You sit on the bus and have abuse heaped on you by the fanatics because you are not wearing the hijab [Islamic head covering]. These things never used to happen." '
Intimidation of women for religious reasons has become more common in the past year, and those who do not cover themselves are often the targets of kidnappers. Salons have been bombed and the Princess Salon's chief stylist, Nazar Zadayan, says he has been threatened several times.
The elections in January that the White House welcomed as the start of an era of democracy in the Middle East have helped to entrench the strictures imposed on women. The winning coalition has close ties to conservative clerics, many of whom believe in the subservient role of women.
"The Americans came into Afghanistan and the women were able to take off their burkas and taste freedom. Here, the Americans come in and we are forced to cover ourselves and become chattels. Democracy will crush the spirit of the Iraqi woman," Mrs. Mahmoud said.
The new government insists that women are not being repressed. It cites a legal provision ensuring that a third of the new parliament's 275 members had to be women.
But Songol Chapuk, the head of the Iraqi Coalition for Women, said the religious parties ensured that only women with conservative values were selected as legislators.
"It is telling that when we marked International Women's Day last month not a single female [legislator] turned up for the commemorations."
Mrs. Chapuk refuses to wear the hijab and even has worn trousers, which brought numerous threats from radicals. Women with similar views have been killed.
Conservative female legislators say the idea that the hijab or abaya -- the traditional gown -- stifles women is a Western misconception.
Salama al-Khafaji, perhaps Iraq's foremost female conservative, said American officials refused to invite her to Iraqi Governing Council meetings when she was a member because she wore the abaya.
"They thought I was a stupid, extreme religious woman, but I am a dentist and one of the few who can perform oral reconstructive surgery in Iraq," she said. "I have covered my body; I have not covered my mind."
Dr. al-Khafaji said the government has no intention of forcing women to cover up, but many Iraqis fear the new government is intent on turning the country into a theocracy.
The terrors of war also have played a part in persuading some Iraqi women to return to traditions and God.
"Before the war, I never used to wear the hijab," said Dalya Khalid, a student. "But nowadays, not wearing it makes me feel horrible inside. We have to repent to God to see us through this war. I am so scared of dying."

And it's worse in Basra ...

Freedom....

90%+ of Americans don't actually care what they're doing to the world as long as it looks good on TV and doesn't affect their regularly scheduled broadcasts.

Only an idiot would have expected that. Saddam wasn't religious he was secular. Now that the regilious zealots are in control WTF did anyone think would happen? Anytime a religion controls the government freedom goes away.

That?s one thing that pisses me off.
People are over here busting their asses, getting shot and the Senate seems to care a shit load about Roids... Give me a break. I am SURE there are more important things they can be doing.
How about some actual GOVERNMENT REFORM! I think that's the committee that is doing the 'hearings'.
People in the states seem to get more upset when a show doesn't air on time or their favorite NBA team gets knocked out of the playoffs than when AMERICANS are dieing overseas.

I really think it all starts with the government \ media.
The media really doesn?t show news worthy stories. We might see a snip here, and a snip there. Look at the news coverage from Vietnam. There is LOADS more actual video \ news from that time period.

I really don?t want to go on about this too long. It will bring me down too much.

BTW - what was this thread about anyway ? Bitching about how the US acts for the Iraqi people?

I think it's pretty obvious that it's a backlash against independence and in favor of conservative Islam. When Saddam was in control the women had plenty of freedom to wear what they want. The extremists just had to deal with it or would face a totalitarian government.

Now that the whole country is being pulled between Democracy and religious rule, women have no protection from religious zealots because the government is currently weak. They come face to face with violent extremists.

Once everything cools down, the US leaves and the mujahadeen from outside of Iraq and the Iraqis that work with them are squashed, the women will gain their freedoms back.

It?s pretty slanted of you to point out this article as another one of your attempts to find that all fault in the world originates in the U.S. I don?t believe it said that the Americans are bombing women?s salons and forcing them to wear a headscarf, it?s saying that these things have been forced upon them since the war started as a kind of backlash against women?s rights that are now being accepted.

What would you do? How would you change the world? Would you just agree that it?s just ?like that in their culture? and just accept that women aren?t able to wear what they want or get their hair done at a salon? I didn't agree with the start of this war but one thing that is good about it is that the women of Iraq may actually enjoy more freedom someday in the future.

It is quite hard to find out what's going on in Iraq these days for the simple reason, I assume, that for safety reasons almost all reporters are confined to their hotel rooms.Such a situation suits our government in the run-up to the election, when they will try to present us with a picture of slow but rewarding progress in Iraq following the elections of two months ago.

A story in the Times last week gives a different picture. The reporter, Catherine Philp, described how a group of picnicking students had been attacked by members of an Islamic militia. Two of them were killed and others beaten with sticks and rifles butts.

According to Ms Philp, the town of Basra is today controlled by fanatical religious militias which disapprove of things like picnics.

Again, how would you suggest changing the world? How would you help these people, pre-Iraq war, gain freedom to do things like disagree with their government, get their hair done and have picnics?

Remember State of the Union speach ???? heard nothing else than WMD ...
Anyway, no time to loose with you ...

As the article states, the US were bragging about how afghan women now could be free and not wear the barka ... Probably a good used market is to sell to Iraqi women, sponsored by the clueless US ...

Anyway, I'll answer this question for you. Your answer is that you'd do NOTHING. That is what seperates you from Americans. You sit around complaining, making an art of it. That isn't our culture, we do something about it. We're certainly not always right but I would much rather be the type that does something.

THE USA HAS BETRAYED
AFGHAN WOMEN FOR 20 YEARS

Nowadays the US media are full of horror stories about how the Taliban mistreats their women. During the last Afghanistan war, the US backed the Pashtun Mujahedeen (later known as the Taliban) - the people who abuse their women.

Russia (the Taliban's opponents in the last war) on the other hand was backing the PDPA regime of Afghanistan, who was fighting FOR women's rights AGAINST the Taliban.

It's OUR fault that the Taliban is ruling Afghanistan and not the PDPA (the party that was backed by the Soviet Union during the last Afghanistan war.) We helped the Taliban defeat the PDPA. We gave the Taliban the weapons they used to seize control over Afghanistan. We trained them. We gave them the power to abuse their own women.

People couldn't go to salons or have picnics in Saddam Hussein's Iraq? Women in Iraq have had the most freedom of women anywhere in the Muslim world. They could go to school, go to college, work, DRIVE CARS, even have positions above men in the workplace.

apparently that requires a labotomy. anyways, at least they had electricity, running water, hospitals that don't get bombed before all this mess. the US is gonna be spending the next 10-20 years and billions of dollars on something they will ultimately never have control of.

You were right originally, the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan was the group the US trained and funded to fight the Russians, and they included Bin Laden and most of the other famous people we call terrorists nowadays. Towards the end the Russians wanted to withdraw and leave some form of stable government, but the Reagan administration insisted that Russia completely withdraw and let the Mujahedeen decide the fate of the country. We all know how that worked out.

The Northern Alliance are the opium dealers who fought the Taliban alongside the US during the war of 2001.

We should do this.

The Middle East will kill all the Jews then nuke each other. That problem would be solved nearly over night. Once we stop giving what little aid we are giving Africa they'll all die too. All of the money we give other countries we can keep at home.

We'll just watch on TV as governments world wide start to fail and a dozen civil wars break out. This sounds like fun for me; It would make TV much more entertaining.

Keep watching your TV buddy, you have a real understanding of how the world works. America is the only reason the world is so peaceful, and Africa sends their thanks for all the good you've done for them.

Agree. In Iran also (even after revolution). I studied Persian & Islamic culture at university & know personally a lot of iranians (& arabs from Iraq) no matter that I never traveled to the Middle East yet.

The reasons of war are obvious - black gold + clean-up of America's own creation to oppose USSR in a region. The same clean-up they did in Afghanistan.
I'm not religious & hate to sound pathetic but I pray Bush will go to hell for what he did to this country. And didn't it ever occur to anybody here that that fucking terroristic act was made by united states government?

I doubt we'd get a lot of the 3rd world products we get so cheap now if we did that.
