Not at all. Something I cannot for the life of me figure out though...

I need a shit load of design done for many different projects. Some things (mainstream related) I have no clue what I'm looking for. I have talked to 5 designers, 4 of which are from the adult school of design. I like adult designers because they are the most out of the box and creative in my opinion. Problem is, they all want paid upfront, usually 100%. I don't understand how they can ask this for a project that is based on an unknown.

I mean, for example, I need a new logo, company letterhead, site design, and some additional graphics designed that all center around the same new company. These guys want the money up front and when I ask why it's always because they have been screwed on projects before. OK, no problem. I have refernces and I would be willing to give up the AmEx number as collateral, but for G*d's sake, 2-3 k deposit on something they nor I have a clue what it will even look like???

What ever happened to concept designing?

Just wanted your input on this since we have some time to kill.

This is where it pays to be well known. I understand your concern but I do the same with my content sales. 100% upfront or I don't even set the shoot up. I have been screwed over in the past and left holding a bag full of custom content that others may never even want.

I have been working with 2 designers lately and neither of them have requested a dime until the projects were complete. Both of them gave me conceptual designs prior to getting too far into it and then we worked from there.

I'm not suggesting that these guys would do the same for you simply because they may not know you but I will be happy to put you in touch with them if you like. Hit me up on ICQ for their contact info.

Thanks four your reply, it makes perfect sense and this was along the lines of what I was thinking. Being new around these parts doesn't help my rep and that's understandable.

I'm at home tonight after a huge Easter din-din, and I don't have ICQ on this laptop. I'll shoot you a message tomorrow or sometime next week if it's cool, I know you are traveling quite a bit anyway lately.

If you speak with them between now and then, let them know the design(s) are for an extreme sports company and there will be a lot of steady work if they have the time.

2k - 3k is standard procedure for superb designers.
In adult 2-3K for a site is never an issue with the right clients.

Nickels and dimes are not worth the pain and hustle for a good designer, though some will settle for the headache.

I agree, it's the unwillingness of some designers to not offer any type of concept that gets me. Money is not a problem for us on this end. For ex. when we were ready to buy content for the sites in our program we werw allowed to have access to samples of exactly what we were buying. No problem there, and after we approved of the samples we dropped almost 5k immediately, done deal. The designer that did the sites in our program offered a bulk deal of 5 sites for $8,000. Again, no problem, as we have seen the work and know the value of the design. But on these other projects, offering some adult designers the opportunity to diversify into mainstream (as some threads here in the past have made mention to that trend) I would have thought that some designers would jump at the chance to give it a shot and offer some concepts. I'm talking about some brandable graphics that will be put on thousands of products and seen on National and possibly World-wide TV and cable channels.

Anyway, thanks for your input, it's well regarded!
