Press blames US for Iraq violence

Press blames US for Iraq violence

Papers across the Middle East on Thursday take a pessimistic view of Iraq's immediate future following the upsurge in violence.

Many accuse the US-led coalition of aggravating the situation by its actions against Shia and Sunni fighters.

In Iraq itself, one paper urges the United Nations to take over, while a Shia paper calls on all sides to exercise restraint.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The last thing we need now is this state of tension and deadlock, which will lead to further escalation. We need restraint on all sides, the demilitarisation of society, an end to unnecessary sabre-rattling, as well as the use of reason and wisdom to ensure a safe and mature path towards the future. We call upon all those who care about Iraq and its people's freedom and independence not to be dragged along by those who want to harm Iraq.

Iraq's Al-Adalah

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The UN should assume a political role equal to that of the occupation forces, so that it can be the main guarantor of the success of the political process... The occupation forces should end their control over political and economic decision-making, and hand over authority and sovereignty to the Iraqis on the agreed deadline.

Iraq's Al-Jaridah

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The policy of mass punishment the coalition forces are seeking to carry out in some Iraqi towns will only add fuel to the fire, and will not extinguish it. The occupation authorities' fierce response will only cause more destruction and bloodshed. Escape from the cycle of violence will not come through American force.

UAE's Al-Bayan

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The reason behind this broad-based revolt should be sought in the occupying troops' oppressive actions... Their operations have brought nothing but death and destruction, chaos, instability and insecurity to the people of Iraq.

Iran's Jomhuri-ye Eslami

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The US administration's military mentality will not help Bush achieve his objectives, nor will it rescue him from the downfall that awaits him... Aimless bloodshed has never been an instrument to bring about peace.

Iran's Al-Vefagh

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It seems the American war in Iraq has resumed from when it stopped a year ago. The Americans are now facing a new situation, which indicates that they have fallen into an Iraqi quagmire and been forced into a corner.

London Al-Arab al-Alamiyah

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The reins of control have slipped out of the US occupation forces' hands. The situation will continue to deteriorate, particularly if the occupation forces insist on arresting Moqtada Sadr.

Jordan's Al-Dustur

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Events in Iraq did not worry American officials a year ago. They feared that their soldiers would be irritated by the many flowers Iraqis would be showering on them.

Commentary by Walid al-Zubeidi in Oman's Al-Watan

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is currently happening in Iraq confirms all the past fears: The USA overthrew the Iraqi regime and then dissolved the Iraqi army with clear the aim of dividing the country along sectarian and ethnic lines.

Commentary by Kheirallah in Lebanon's Al-Mustaqbal

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is happening in Iraq is clear and convincing evidence that the US-British objective was nothing but that of occupation.

Syria's Tishrin

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The recent incidents showed that peaceful movements in Iraq will not last very long in the face of the occupiers' unilateral actions, and that if the Americans ignore the Iraqi people on matter such as elections, the appointment of a cabinet and the drafting of Iraq's constitution, even worse things may happen.

Iran's Khorasan

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The United States has vowed to deal with Moqtada Sadr's Mehdi Army, but it will be difficult for it to do this, since these forces are a popular phenomenon and a religious ideology, not an organised force. The US forces can defeat the Iraqi army, and even all the Arab armies, but not ideologies and religious beliefs, particularly in a country like Iraq.

London Al-Quds Al-Arabi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The continuing absence of security in Iraq will see the emergence of more radicals like Al-Sadr.

Commentary by Huda al-Husseini in London-based Al-Sharq al-Awsat

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yep, same old shit that's been going on forever.

We really should let the UN take over though...If we have to be a part of that horseshit organization, we may as well make 'em do a little work!
