Pre-nupts....wtf?

OK so my friend said pre-nupts only cover assets that were accumulated before the marriage, and even if you write into the deal that stuff/money made during the marriage is all seperate, she can still sue you for anything and will probably win.

Is this true, or is there such a thing as an iron clad pre-nupt?

(that's weird, some Saved by the Bell rerun is on TV and a teacher just said the phrase "steal all my money" as I was writing this....)

Depends on what state you are in. And even if she doesn't get anything that was yours before you brought in, there is still alimony and possible child support. Oscar Delahoya has to pay his ex, Shannon, between 15,000 and 30,000 a month in child support.

You can exclude assets from before the marriage and assets as they accumulate. I was told the key is that she has to become vested over time. I don't think they hold up if you just use it to keep everything and they get nothing no matter what.

My state finally has something right. 2k/month cap on child support in MN.

In California, we have a thing called palimony. It's the same thing as alimony only you give it to your ex girlfriend/boyfriend to support instead of your ex wife/husband.

We used to have common law and then they got rid of it. So this was the solution. If your ex convinces a judje that you were planning on marrying her or even promised it, and she really believed it to a point were it had an affect on her life(job, career, kids, housing, emotions, etc.), then you may be liable to pay support to her.

Isn't that fuckin grand?!

It all depends how it's written. The more money you have, the less they work.

You're insane if you have loads of money and don't get an ironclad pre-nupt before getting married.

You still have to follow the preceps of the law for the state you reside in, but you can protect yourself to the max with one.

Also, I'm telling from my own experience and friends I know, do NOT fall for the BS when a gal pressures you with the sales pitch "If you love me why do we need one".

Run, don't walk, if a girl says that to you.

Yes! And I think it's hilarious.
I have a lawyer friend that I would do research for for extra money and he had a case once of lesbians fighting over palimony.
And it's funny cause in our county, they don't allow same sex marriage. But the lady still ended up with a few thousand a month palimony, and one of their houses!
