Twelve years worth of checking in the case of Iraq...and twelve years worth of tolerating an avowed enemy. The loss of 600 soldiers does not have any military significance and I have little sympathy for the losses of the enemy.

What has "happened" is very simple...in the case of Afhganistan the US took down the government of a country when it refused to turn over enemies of the US that it housed. In the case of Iraq the US took down the government of a country that was an avowed enemy of the US...which...in my opinion...the US should have down within the first year of the '91 cease fire.

As far as Arms not protecting the US from "terrorism"...Arms will certainly kill the terrorists/enemies...and it does not bother the American people in general to kill enemies...and we are very good at it. If the CONUS is struck again...I am satisfied that our military response will be less subdued.

Iraq was an "imminent threat" almost daily to our pilots and our British ally's pilots...but never attained the status of being an "imminent threat" to the CONUS. He was an avowed enemy whom the US grew tired of.
