Depends, what do you do?

The AMD64 has benchmarked faster than the P4 Xeon while in 32-bit emulation mode, it's pretty damn fast.

I run a 64-bit OS on a dual opteron, and it screams, faster than the quad Xeon I was playing with before. Faster architecture, faster bus, faster memory... You'll notice a huge difference.

But if you're just surfing the web and checking email, who cares?

Do I need a 64bit version operating system? or will standard windows 2000 work?

Uh...

It benchmarks faster than the topend P4s while in 32-bit emulation mode, because of all the other benefits of a new architecture. If you're buying a new system anyway, it's a good choice.
