Leave your comp on or off

I am just wondering what everybody else does. When I first got a computer 10 years ago I've always turned it off to conserve power, but in the last 3 years i just keep on leaving it up all night. So what do u do

Always turn it off. I can't leave it on all the time, it's against instinct. I just can't, I don't know why but I can't, somehow I feel sorry for it

If we aren't on one of them they are off. Read your fire insurance policies... lol If you have something in that room catch fire (even if it might not be the puter) and they find something in the on position. You are outta luck.

Non essentials such as puters, toasters, coffeepots etc etc should always be off unless in use. They will use that to get out of paying if at all possible.

Never turn it off. Several reasons. I used to build computers (10 years ago) and when you turn them off and on all the time you find that the power supply would go bad from the surges. Many computer nuts have agreed to this over the years. I have not lost a power supply since I stopped turning them off. Also, I have had the on/off switch go tits-up from the extra use.

If your CPU fans dies. Then wont your CPU just overheat and lockup and the computer will be basically in idle. If your power supply fan(s) die then thats a different story

i've googled the catching fire theory and here's what i found out

I don't think I've ever heard of a PC or monitor causing a fire. Once
all the smoke gets out of the power supply, pretty much nothing happens.

Last place I worked at built computers, thousands per day. As part
of the process, they went through a four hour burn in. Over several
years, I can remember one power supply failing to the extent of
actually releasing a cloud of smoke. No fire.

I've had several systems end up with clogged or failed fans; they
overheated, but did not smoke or catch fire from that.

I had one old system returned with stability problems. This system
used a MultiBus backplane, with cards about the size of a sheet of
paper. When I opened it up, there were layers of lint on all the
boards, a couple of inches of it in the sides, clogging the filters,
and covering the drives (5.25" full-height). After some work with
a brush, vacuum, and air hose, I got it all cleaned out. Afterwards,
everything worked fine. We went ahead and replaced the hard drives,
since they were a few years old, but I continued using them for a
few more years in other systems.

I've never had a system fail that damaged anything; there's just
not that much energy being released. Usually the power supply will
just die and stop doing anything, one of the good features of
switchers. Most often, a hard drive fails and just stops spinning.

I have three systems at home running full time on a UPS, five of
mine at work, and a couple of hundred work systems which are on
full time. We don't worry about then catching fire.

Usually always on at home. At my main offices most of the folks turn theirs off at night, though I usually leave mine running continuously about half the time. Always turn off my monitors.
