DDT was a very popular insecticide used primarily to kill the Anopheles mosquito which carries the maleria virus. The maleria virus has killed 1/2 of the people that have ever lived. DDT was later found to cuase cancer and many other fun things.
Actually contrary to popular belief there is actually no scientific evidence what-so-ever that DDT causes cancer or any other ill-effects. It may, but no studies have been done.
In the 70's there was a huge uproar of environmentalism.. one of their primary targets was industrial chemicals etc. DDT was in such large usage that they creasted mass histeria about ill-effects.. such as cancer.. with absolutely no backing. However, the up-roar was so large that the U.S government passed a bill banning the use of DDT.
This is very unfortunate because, while not a huge problem in North America, Malaerea is one of the worlds most serious viruses which claims millions of lives annually. Without U.S funding and support of DDT in Malaerea infested countries in Africa a lot of people are dying.

Actually there have been studies done, and DDT does have adverse effects on humans and animals. There is a really famous one written in the 50s that was pretty much responsible for the regulation of pesticides, it's called Silent River or Quiet River, something River. Search on Amazon for "effects of DDT" and you'll find several books on the subject.

Ah yeah, that's the one. I actually never realized what the title meant until now. I thought it was spring as in a spring. Thus confusing it with river.

While it is unfortunate that many people die due to maleria, we should be thankful that it does exist. If not for maleria the earth would be even more overpolulated than it is now. I contracted maleria myself when I was nine, and while its not fun, its not the worst way to die. I did not receive treatment and I survived.
On a brighter note, some africans have evolved a defense mechanism against maleria: sickle cell anemia.
