I'd have to agree with you. If he only wanted the purse, all he had to do was pull it when she was down. She didn't fight him so there was absolutely no reason for the violence. I'm not sure why he put her in the elevator - doesn't seem like he got anything off of her more. He also wasted more time in doing that.
