Servers at home

Does anyone run there own server, say from home?

If so, how easy is this to do?

Is it worth doing?

What are the costs?

And what do you need?

I host my sites from my Playstation 2. Not only does the PS2 work great as a server, but if you want you can play Grand Theft Auto on it too. Great investment.

I have a ton of boxes here for playing around with, if you want to actually host a proper site then rent a proper box at a host though. Mail servers work wll from home though. ;-)

Setting up a box at home is not difficult though, as long as you RTFM, and it's excellent practice for your *nix and server admin skills.

I have a 1500/256k DSL business account with my own IP address space routed to my home so technically I could serve content from here... it's not really worth it though, I'd rather have my server sitting in a rack in a secure data centre with a/c and redundant carrier connections, rather than my warm office with a single DSL link and the server sitting on the carpet!

I know some who have tried it and then went to dedicated hosting, after their stay in the mental institution.

Heavy meds.

I guess the real question is why would anyone want to?

Thats an excellent idea. I have a rack of TRS-80's pushing about 640Kb of bandwidth a month, Its very secure, using 2 flashed atari 2600's as multiple firewalls. I'll have to upgrade to PS2's but I think it might be overkill for my needs. Thanks for the idea though.

I used to have some servers at home running through some T-1s. I also have a friend that does this now. The thing is, that it's cheaper to buy your server and co-locate it somewhere than to be paying for a couple of T-1 lines. I went to co-location and my friend is starting to do the same. Bandwidth is just plain cheaper at a co-location place than doing it at home.

If you don't know anything about running a server, either pay someone that does know or don't do it. People are going to try and hack into your server the first day it's plugged in. You need to know security very well and what to do if something goes wrong. Don't get any kind of dedicated server if you don't know what your doing and aren't willing to pay someone that does.

allanuk needs to get his own domain name sorted out with some shared hosting instead of using redcloud pages before he even THINKS about a dedicated server !!

I hosted a semi medium sized (2 - 3k hits per day) site on a win2k box with apache at home a few years ago.. It worked nice. I wouldn't host any large sites at home though..

Yep, that's exactly rite, why go through all of the headaches when it's soooo cheap nowadays and you can have someone else set it all up and monitor it for you.

So you can do it then?

Sure, although if it is on a residential connection your ISP might not like it....

You normally simply need a computer running server software (*nix or Windows) with your IP on the network card and a way to see your URL or domain name over the Internet based on your IP address.

There are a few ways to do this, I like ZoneEdit.com if you have a static IP. Up to 5 domains free for a year...

Why would you not want to do it?

The performance from the server depends on upload; most DSL connections are fast down but not up; so your server chokes if the traffic gets heavy.

Not to mention environment and security. Your server is probably much happier in a climate-controlled environment in a locked cage. Hosting at home seems like a good idea until someone comes and steals your server (and the 75 domains on it...) This is not a worry in a secure datacenter, like we can provide...

Good luck with your site

i find it easier to run all my sites through my casio wrist watch.

makes checking my content really easy, plus i always know what time it is, even up to a depth of 100 metres.

haha funny pick. Anyways 3 years ago for like a year. A run a small site on my DSL modem. All i had to do was leave windows up and running. The server ran in the background so I rarely noticed it was even there. but that site was getting like 500 visits a day, and not burning alot of bandwidth

yeah, you need the newest RAID array, as some of the casio wristwatches are pretty sophisticated. Mine can tell the time in 2 places at once, for example. Did i mention that it's also waterproof to a depth of 100 metres? Which can be particularly convenient whenh i am on the beach, need to take a leak, and check my content both at the same time, but dont want to walk all the way to the washrooms.

All in all makes for a very capable server. Especially if your watch is solar powered.....(used to be a problem, as my webmaster lived in a basement suite and had our server on his Casio, and our sites kept crashing until he got groceries or went for a walk...)
