AOL begins blocking "spammy" domains today..

Article

any upset about this? while i don't deal in promoting sites at all, i could see this affecting sales/signups across the board for many sites who's domains are now unreachable from AOL's network.

alternately, this could be used as weapon by the unscrupulous sites, a new kind of "joe jobbing" to hurt competition...

couldn't agree more, my only concern was that some might start sending spam w/ the intent to get their competition on the "block" list to hurt their business..

I don't think you quite get it Dean... they're talking about spammers spamming honest webmasters' sites to said honest webmasters' sites blocked by AOL... meaning no more juicy AOL traffic at all for said honest webmaster... which would suck ass.

This is bad. Once major ISP's start blocking access to websites, then activists and governments will ask them to block more, and we are all at risk.

Well - it would seem to me that AOL would have to be damn careful not to block sites that their members wish access to. Otherwise, their members will get pissed and leave AOL.

I can't help but think that before AOL blocks anything - they will investigate where it came from first.

If it weren't for those punk-ass spammers - none of this would be an issue. You can thank them for fucking it up for everybody!

from the sheer size of the numbers mentioned in that article it really sounds to me like they are using some sort of mechanized solution to pick the blocked domains, probably based on the return headers from the offending spam, forged or otherwise... i really find it hard to believe the drones over at AOL are hand-checking all these URL's..
