So Brandy and I went to see The Passion of Christ last nite.

I hope this thread doesn't turn into psycho wierdness...but I'm curious of others opinions of the movie.

I grew up as a preachers kid...PK for those of you others out there who are in the know.

My father did in-depth study in the ancient judiac ways of life. Which means I was exposed to quit a bit of that study as well.

Then during my first 8 years of my television career, I was the director of a half hour weekly show called "In the FootSteps of The Messiah" on The Trinity Broadcasting Network. During my time shooting that show, we took 3 weeks to head to the middle east to shoot at tons of archeological digs of significance in regards to ancient warfare in Israel, Syria, Egypt, Lebanon.

My time in Israel was also a very moving experience for me. I spent a good bit of time in the Arab Quarter (The Old City) in Jerusalem. Spent some time on the Southern Steps of the temple, and due to our shooting and ties with the Temple Institute...were able to go into the Rabbi's Tunnels.

When I watched this movie...and they moved around the old city and in the Temple...in the Garden of Gethsemene...and then the road to Golgotha...

It looked in my minds eye to be, based upon what I've studied...an accurate description on the trial and crucifixion of Christ.

Seeing the city walls from the outside of the city from Golgotha...It felt like I was back in Israel.

Minus the visual manifestation of satan and his demons, I think Mel Gibson did a spectacular job at portraying a hard story to show accurately considering the horrific tools of torture the Romans used and of course...crucifixion.

Opinions? And please...lets not make this a racist thing. Interested in what you guys think about Mels job on the movie as a whole.

hollywood is hollywood, dont let the christians market their god to you in the form of entertainment.

see this for w2hat it is.

they used to make us watch these movies in catholic school.

now they are million dollar productions.

christianity grows like vegas.

the more you bring in to the house, the more the house takes.

think of what they are trying to do with the film.

for one, story is nothing of Jesus life, which is what christianity is about.

the movie is only about the death.

classic case of catholics using DEATH and TORTURE to scare people in kneeling and bowing.

fuck mel Gibson and his stupid movie.

If he did the same movie with the same amunt of funds, and production exceot it was about Christians BURNING WITCHES, and showed the witches being burned alive and showed what christians did to Pagans would tyou be as moved?

This movie is really just faith based propaganda.

The historical records of the crucifiction are so scarce there is reasonable doubt that it ever happened.

Even if you take the bible as true, the accounts are very terse.

Obviously Mel has some major issues, and this movie is his way of working them out.:

I had heard so much about the movie by the time I saw it, it was pretty much what I expected. I don't understand so many people who call the movie "life changing", perhaps it is their first exposure to the story. It was a very good film though and will deserve the many awards it will certainly win (however I think it being released so early in the Oscar year, and "politics", that it may be given lesser consideration there).

I tthought the depiction between the delicate balance of rule of the Temple and the occupying Romans was dead on.

Having visited Masada and the Golon...the ferocity of the Romans was steadfast and unshakable.

I mean shit, the Romans took months and months to build a seige ramp to the top of Masada to attempt the capture of the peoples on its summit. The Jews committed suicide by jumping off the mountain just before the Romans reached the top...knowing the atrocities the Romans had committed elsewhere.

The depiction of these types of atrocities in this film, were indeed hard to watch...but I really felt were dead on.

Come on, he was beaten and beaten and beaten and humiliated and left to die on a cross in order to become a martyr for our sins. That's the whole movie. There wasn't much of a story in there.

Personally I won't see it. when I heard all the crap they were going to sell to promote the movie it made me sick.
But....
When I heard Pat Robertson, Sean Hannity, Bill OReilly and Jerry Falwell all talk about it and keep bringing up the bible and the gospels every time they can get a word in it really made sick

I've worked with some of the biggest Televangelists and man its just always hard to stomach.

I'm a very non-religious person but I must say, that movie was EXTREMELY POWERFUL!!! It was just an all around great movie and done very well. The fact that it was done in Aramaic (*sp) and Latin made it so much more convincing and real.

Do yourself and favor and check it out. Even if you're a non-believer, it's a great movie!

I'll break down my review.

on a scale of 1-10 ( 10 being the best )

look - 8 . Most biblical movies, like fantasy and sci-fi movies, look fake and cheesy and this one didn't. Like lord of the rings it looked real, the costumes were good the sets everything look authentic.

cast - 10. thought the casting was perfect. he only had 1 really recognizable person in it which gave it a real feel. Too often when there are known actors in a movie they are less belivable in their rolls and distract you from the movie as a whole.

story - 4. For me, the story is known, you know how it's going to end and there is no real surprises. I was unsure about the subtitles and found myself frustrated by them. Not because I had to read them, I see subtitled movies all the time, but because there were a lot of times when people are talking and there are no subtitles so you don't know what they are saying. For example there are a group of Roman soldiers that beat Jesus through the whole movie. Through the entire process they are saying things to each other and laughing and yet there is never a subtitle so you have no idea what they are saying. Also, they never really identify who people are. I'm familiar with the story but still found myself confused. They identify Judus and Peter and Mary and Magedelan but that is about it. You know who some of the people are, or at least I think I did. For some that could be confusing.

overall - 3. I know it's a low score but here is why. For me it would have made a great 30-45 minute short film. The movie is 120 minutes and 90 minutes of it is just them beating on Jesus. I know the point of it is that he was trying to show how horrible crucifiction is and what a supreme sacrifice Jesus made but most of it didn't work for me. The scene where he is being scourged is very powerful and effective but after that it gets tedious. the scene of Jesus carrying the cross through the city to the hilltop took 30-40 minutes during which there was next to no dialogue. We see Jesus fall and get up and struggle. Then theres dramatic music, then he falls again, a different way, gets back up and struggles. Repeated over and over. Some people will see the power of his struggle and the humanity in him and those that helped him during this but for me it just felt like it went on forever. Plus they scourged him so badly that 90% of his body was covered with open wounds and he bled like a waterfall through the whole thing. That seemed unrealistic because you would think he would have either passed out or at least been so weak that he was helpless. Again, I understand that it is meant to show the power of God in him, but he is portrayed as a human, we are asked to feel sympathy for him as a man, yet in this version he does things no man could do so I felt like I was watching Rambo outrun an explosion more than I was watching Christ struggle with this sins of man.

All in all, as you can probably tell, I didn't think it was very good. I most likely won't see it again and can't really reccommend it to anyone. I personally didn't see what all the controversy was about in regards to the anti-sematism. If this movie were made about any other subject matter, with this amount of gore and violence, it would have gotten an NC-17 rating instead of the R. That is what the controversy should be about. I guess I just went into it with very high expectations and was let down badly.

just my 2 cents. I'm curious to hear what you think of it when you see it.

I did not see the movie yet, although I might do if I come across it on TV or my DivX collection ;)
However, I want to ask some of you...
How do you know/judge if the movie is accurate/reliable? Noone knows what happened back then for sure, not even remotely.
All that is speculated is that - there was this Jew called Yeshua, which said to piss off the romans as well as some of the Jewish religious figures, until someone snitched on him and he got caught by the romans and killed by them. Basically a Jewish internal affairs story.
As a matter of fact not even that is knowen for real.
Remember, if events didn't occure as is told (or depicted in the movie) there would be no christian religion really since noone would have been able to say "Jesus died for our sins" if he just died of old age.

However, I do wonder why someone makes a movie about it with any claims of authenticity and accuracy where the actual final goal of the movie is to make money (otherwise he would sell it for $1 to every TV network in the world), and I don't understand, if this movie is so upfront an transparent, why does Gibson avoid personal questions about his beliefs and his fathers' Nazi beliefs and practices.

However, there is no denying, that movie seems to have a big impact on the christian world and even beyond. Im not sure its a positive impact, but impact for sure.

Also, they never really identify who people are. I'm familiar with the story but still found myself confused. They identify Judus and Peter and Mary and Magedelan but that is about it. You know who some of the people are, or at least I think I did. For some that could be confusing. overall - 3. I know it's a low score but here is why. For me it would have made a great 30-45 minute short film. The movie is 120 minutes and 90 minutes of it is just them beating on Jesus. I know the point of it is that he was trying to show how horrible crucifiction is and what a supreme sacrifice Jesus made but most of it didn't work for me. The scene where he is being scourged is very powerful and effective but after that it gets tedious. the scene of Jesus carrying the cross through the city to the hilltop took 30-40 minutes during which there was next to no dialogue. We see Jesus fall and get up and struggle. Then theres dramatic music, then he falls again, a different way, gets back up and struggles. Repeated over and over. Some people will see the power of his struggle and the humanity in him and those that helped him during this but for me it just felt like it went on forever. Plus they scourged him so badly that 90% of his body was covered with open wounds and he bled like a waterfall through the whole thing. That seemed unrealistic because you would think he would have either passed out or at least been so weak that he was helpless. Again, I understand that it is meant to show the power of God in him, but he is portrayed as a human, we are asked to feel sympathy for him as a man, yet in this version he does things no man could do so I felt like I was watching Rambo outrun an explosion more than I was watching Christ struggle with this sins of man. All in all, as you can probably tell, I didn't think it was very good. I most likely won't see it again and can't really reccommend it to anyone. I personally didn't see what all the controversy was about in regards to the anti-sematism. If this movie were made about any other subject matter, with this amount of gore and violence, it would have gotten an NC-17 rating instead of the R. That is what the controversy should be about. I guess I just went into it with very high expectations and was let down badly. just my 2 cents. I'm curious to hear what you think of it when you see it.

How do you know/judge if the movie is accurate/reliable? Noone knows what happened back then for sure, not even remotely. All that is speculated is that - there was this Jew called Yeshua, which said to piss off the romans as well as some of the Jewish religious figures, until someone snitched on him and he got caught by the romans and killed by them. Basically a Jewish internal affairs story. As a matter of fact not even that is knowen for real. Remember, if events didn't occure as is told (or depicted in the movie) there would be no christian religion really since noone would have been able to say "Jesus died for our sins" if he just died of old age. However, I do wonder why someone makes a movie about it with any claims of authenticity and accuracy where the actual final goal of the movie is to make money (otherwise he would sell it for $1 to every TV network in the world), and I don't understand, if this movie is so upfront an transparent, why does Gibson avoid personal questions about his beliefs and his fathers' Nazi beliefs and practices. However, there is no denying, that movie seems to have a big impact on the christian world and even beyond. Im not sure its a positive impact, but impact for sure.
