windows 2Kpro users. How do I get rid of these?

I go to START>SETTINGS>TASKBAR AND START MENU and get this screen.

But when I click "remove" or "advanced", it looks like I launched the main windows explorer, and all I see is my programs. IT DOESN'T show me a list of those exact programs, it shows me a list of ALL my programs.

I'm afraid that if I click on an item there to remove it, that I'll really be removig it out of my start menu, and not that bar in the lower right hand corner of my screen.

    Can anyone help?

    Open regedit

    Look at

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

    And

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run

All the bits in each of these are what loads when windows starts up and theoretically can be removed safely. I would always advise only removing the ones you can identify as things you've added at some time. The properties are paths to the .exe, this should be enough to let you know what they are.

In addition ofcourse, theres the items in the Startup Folder!

          Hey RedShoe,

I'm not sure what you want to do here. These programs are in your taskbar for a reason, namely because they were loaded while Windows was starting up. Not every program needs to be loaded along with Windows, but some programs, like Norton Antivirus do because they scan your computer in the background.

Let me tell you the first icon is your Windows sound properties icon and you can remove it safely by right clicking on it and choose "Properties" and then uncheck the option where it says "Load this icon in the taskbar" or equivalent. You won't gain any faster loading times if that's what your aiming for but you willl have more space in your taskbar.

The last icon is a little icon showing you that Windows is updating itself in the background. It's ok because it will disappear when Windows has downloaded the update for you and a little window will popup letting you know it's ready to install.

About all the other icons. I recognize Norton Antivirus and Speedometer (or whatever some tuneup program) but the rest is unfamiliar to me. In most cases (pretty much always) you can right click the icon for a little options menu. There is always an in-program option where it lets you remove the icon from your taskbar. Just check this out for every program in your taskbar.

If you are not sure which ones to load along with Windows and which ones should be loaded, just go thru every program and judge whether it improves your computer or not. Memory accelerators and antivirus programs are smart to load along with Windows but things like messenger programs aren't really that necessary.

If you completely remove a program from the Run directory in the registry like stated in the post above, you will not remove the program itself but just stop it from loading along with Windows. The icon will also disappear when you delete a registry value like this. But you might want to consider first what program to load and what not to load.

If you're not too sure about it just make a little list of all the programs and I can tell you which one is useful and which one is crap.

          Good luck.
