shouldnt DoS protection come as standard or does it take extra resources or work? i dont know much about servers

Well, the additional DoS protection is the addition of several On-Site team members monitoring your connection for DoS (flood) attacks in the Datacenter. If something DOES happen, and the server needs to be repaired, no cost is necessary....this is typically for high traffic sites, or sites with constant DoS attacks. There is basic flood protection enabled, but not monitored, and repairs are not covered.

However, even without, DoS protection, your server is still remotely monitored (as well as monitored by myself), just not for that particular protection. --forgot to add that =P
