SSL Certs... What're the significant differences amongst the services?

I see verisign.com sells them for like $800+ a year...

then thawte.com for $200

then digicert.com for $99

what are the differences here? speed? downtime, etc etc?

and, once i make a decision, how long does it take to have it ready.. is it instant?

thanks.

I got SSL certificates and code signing certificates from Globalsign and they are the biggest pack of fucking morons I have ever dealt with in my life. Whatever you do dont use them.

I have heard good things about Thawte.

Speed and downtime have nothing to do with a secure certificate. It's mainly which browsers trust which secure certificate companies. There isn't much difference with the cheap ones as the expensive ones. Some of them you pay extra to show a seal.

For example here is a list of which browsers trust the InstantSSL certificate.

With any of the major names, such as Thawte, Verisign, and Geotrust,
there is o difference at all in what you're buying.
Bascially you're just paying a bribe to Microsoft so that IE
will trust your cert. All the major browsers trust certs from
all of the big three companies.
You can compare, then, based on price and how much hassle
it takes to get you cert.

As you mentioned, versisign is expensive as shit.
So that basically leaves Thawte and GeoTrust.
I can get you a deal on a GeoTrust cert that's better than what
you get buying from them directly, and without as much hassle.

Thawte:
1 year $199
2 years $349

GeoTrust:
1 year $159.00
2 years $278.00
3 years $398.00

GeoTrust bought through me:
1 year $139.00
2 years $238.00
3 years $318.00
