I know this isnt helpfull at all Tom, but most of the guys i knew that ran their guitar through their PC had basic software were they had different distortions/effects.

And which brings up to the question.. why to run your guitar through your PC?

dude, you should pick up a v- amp. Behringer makes a good one. Cheaper than Line 6 and others. My brother has one and they sound great. I have the bass version and I'm really happy with it for computer recording or just fucking around.

Agree with Shagpipe, I have tried mostly of real time effects and mostly are crap to use in real time, some of them are great to add the effect once you have already recorded the clean guitar. Buy a v-amp and you will be amazed about how it sounds using the pc or headphones, it' great for home practice where i can't bring my Peavy 5150 full stack

I have one of these in my recording studio, and love it. It hooks up to your USB port or your sound card and othe other side hooks to a stereo. If you subscribe to their web site, they have other downloadable tones, lessons and riffs broken down for you.

I'm not an apple fan, but I own one just to use for music and music only. PCs just don't cut it for music applications, and I don't like apple for business.

I've been a fan of rackmount effects for years. About 6 months ago I bought a Line 6 PodXT. It is about the coolest box I have ever seen or heard in my life. It does pretty much everything, and with the turn of a knob you go from some really close copies of Eddie, Satch, Queen, U2, Metallica, Eric Johnson, and many many more. I am amazed every time I power up how good this thing is. They have entire communities online to trade sounds - it has USB and MIDI.

But if you insist on software only, you can get Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro, which is very complicated to use. It comes with a light version of "Revalver" which from what I understand is probably what you're looking for.

Ive got the POD 2.0 I have been messing with.... It does have pretty much EVERYTHING in it you could ever want.... I am using it as a preamp through my Marshall right now but its built for direct line recording..... Like VirtuMike said they are pretty wild but his is the XT which is the newest version so they are still pricey.... I got my 2.0 off Ebay for 100 bucks and havent been dissapointed at all...

I've had that baby for almost 2 years now, never done me wrong.
As for real time sound distortion the only thing I can suggest is a MAC, there are some programmes that I've heard of that are suppose to create effects Guitar Pro. Never tested it though.
