With Interep he will work closely with advertisers on developing radio-based solutions that address their marketing needs. ?Rick is a talented marketing pro who has a tremendous track record of developing creative custom solutions to help marketers reach their goals,? says Interep Innovations SVP Sheila Kirby, -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arbitron Completes Sample-Size Increases With RADAR 80 RADAR 80, set for release on March 22, will reflect the listening habits of more than 70,000 diarykeepers as Arbitron completes its final phase of augmenting the sample for the ratings service, which measures total listening to all commercials aired on 40 participating radio networks. Joining RADAR 80 are three new networks: CrystalNet Prestige, Jones MediaAmerica TWC Radio Network and Premiere Urban One Radio Network. Meanwhile, Arbitron says persons 35-44 continue to listen to radio more than any other demographic. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Simmons Media Adds In Utah's Ski Country The owner of 13 stations ? seven of which are located in the Salt Lake City-Ogden-Provo Arbitron market ? has agreed to acquire KPEB-FM/Huntsville, UT from Bruce Buzil's Millcreek Broadcasting for $4.4 million. KPEB serves the ski resort of Park City, east of Salt Lake City, and is presently dark. The station's 2kw signal is located at 103.1 MHz. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WPHT Marks First Anniversary Of Operation Iraqi Freedom Infinity's Philadelphia News/Talker sends morning host Michael Smerconish and evening talker Dom Giordano to Washington, DC on Tuesday for two live broadcasts from the Pentagon to mark the first anniversary of the launch of the war in Iraq. Both hosts will feature live interviews with representatives from the Department of Defense, National Security Council and Department of State and other cabinet-level officials, as well as with members of congress. Smerconish and Giordano will also be chatting during their shows with U.S. soldiers who are currently serving on the front lines in Iraq. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Outspoken Artist Frightened By Indecency Debate "It scares the devil out of me," Don Henley said about the efforts at the FCC and on Capitol Hill to raise the fines the FCC can impose on artists or others who violate the broadcast-indecency regulations. He told XM Satellite Radio host George Taylor Morris that it is especially troubling because the FCC doesn't have authority over musicians. During Friday afternoon's debut of XM's Artist's Workshop series, which the company bills as a version of Bravo's Inside The Actor's Studio for musicians, Henley said, "I'm not one of those artists who usually has these problems, but I think it's pretty weird to talk about fining an artist $500,000 when we aren't regulated by the FCC." And as he did last year before the Senate Commerce Committee, Henley expressed concern that consolidation in media is making it harder for new artists to break into the music business. "Mainstream radio is becoming more and more homogenized." Henley said. He added, "Sometimes the DJ you're hearing isn't even there in the station. It just flies in the face of the FCC's mandate of preserving localism." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don Henley Decries Consumers' Attitudes Towards Musicians The singer-songwriter said during an exclusive Friday-afternoon appearance at XM Satellite Radio's Washington, DC headquarters that the indifference many consumers have about downloading free music from the Internet is especially troubling when weighed against other obstacles artists face. "The record business has never been honest," Henley told an intimate audience of about 50 during the debut edition of XM's Artist's Workshop program. "The record companies don't want to pay artists, and now we have fans stealing from them, so it really puts artists between a rock and a hard place. It sure has a detrimental effect on kids trying to break into this business." Still, he didn't agree with the RIAA's recent effort to crack down on file sharers, which has led to lawsuits against some underage violators. "I didn't agree with arresting children," he said, "even though they were very sophisticated thieves." Henley believes that in an environment where downloaded digital music is increasingly becoming the format of choice of consumers, it's wise for artists to take control and start selling their own music on the Internet. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- George Carlin Says Indecency Debate Rooted In 'Religious Superstition' The 66-year-old comedian ? whose "Seven Dirty Words" bit fueled its own debate over broadcast obscenity more than 25 years ago ? believes the reason the debate continues to rage all these years later is feelings of shame about the human body that come from strict religious teachings. "There's an idea that the human body is somehow evil and bad and there are parts of it that are especially evil and bad, and we should be ashamed," Carlin tells the Associated Press. "Fear, guilt and shame are built into the attitude toward sex and the body. It's reflected in these prohibitions and these taboos that we have." He also blames the media, which, he says, reacts to fears expressed by advertisers. "What I always remind people is, radio and television and, as it happens, newspapers and magazines too, are advertising media. When you have commercialism involved, you have the kind of fear that advertisers are very afraid of offending some potential customers. They don't want to lose a sale. So they have this need to inspect and clean up and watch the content in order not to hurt their own sales. It's based on success at the cash register."
