		 I do

It's pretty simple actually. As long as you have the parts its only a matter of putting the cords into the right plugs - and you get the machine a bit cheaper and exactly like you want it!

We've been building our own for years.

We buy our parts locally from good computer shops, not big chain stores. |

I like to go to alienware.com and take note of their configurations then buy the parts and mimic the setups they build right down to the ram...hundreds less and just as powerful.

But you don't get the cheesy tower, the free tee shirt, or the customer support. Which is fine by me...

		 I do.

Though last one I bought was to upgrade the MB and CPU, and I wanted a new case that would hold 6 HDs plus CD and DVD. I had them install the MB in the case, plus the boot drive. Charged me 10 bucks for that. Saved me some time.

I've built a couple, in the process of building another. I don't know about buying parts online, though. I usually pick up most of my stuff at computer shows/swap meets.

Yea I always do! Then I keep upgrading it! And I get warranties for the mobo, get the 2 yr one, and right before the two years I'll overheat it, and they give me the new one, but it's a newer upgraded one since they don't have ones from 2 yrs prior!

its really alot cheaper if you build your own, at least you get to decide what you put into you computer, you get to know the components, get to feel the wire-ing get to touch the fans etc (ps. dont attempt this whilst its plugged in) plus you can mod the case, search google for case modding and you will see what i mean!

4 hdd's are quite normal imo i always build my own PC..saves you a couple of 100 if you search a bit Also, when you buy a 'standard' PC they can throw in cheap RAM/cpu cooler etc..you can avoid this by buying your own stuff

tigerdirect.com u'll be surprised how expandable your computer is if you build your own. dells and gateway computers are already maxed out in their configuration so no room for expansion.

I build my personal PC's myself. Love doing it this way instead of off the shelf.

I buy a lot from NewEgg.com. Best prices. Fastest shipping. Customer reviews on most every product they carry so you can read opinions on components before buying.

When I used to build my systems it was back in the old days. Only took a few hours. But loading that software was the bitch! So nowadays we have firewire. How's that for transferring data from old hard drive to new one? Any tricks boys? |

For the money you are going to invest, you cant get much cheaper then a Dell and they are extremly reliable. pentium 4 800mhz front side bus gig of ram it will fly, you will feel like you just got a supercharged computer... at a good price too

dells dont necessarily come maxed, you decide what goes into it, so you decide its capabilities.

If you want a top notch computer like the ones at www.alienware.com you can look each part up at www.pricegrabber.com and get a good price.

If you don't need a PC right now wait until the new bus speeds come out. DDR400 isn't as fast as rambus 1066 but rambus is expensive and full of problems. The next DDR should make the decision easier.

the most important lesson ive learned building my own is dont go cheap on the case and power supply. you can spend $20 here or a few hundred. dont go putting your hundreds of dollars worth of parts in a crappy case! |

DEFINATELY use http://www.newegg.com I buy all of my stuff there. They're ultra fast with shipping, they have great prices, plus there's always a lot of people that post informative reviews on a lot of the items, which always comes in handy if you're digging around for an item that you're not the most familier with.

get good silver mounts for mounting the main board. dont use plastic ones. If the board touches the case could shock it out.

Only prob i had when building was i didnt use these silver mounts for the main board. the board didnt include them. My 512 ram chips wherent working for some reason. But i think i could of shorted the board out using the plasic mounts or it was a defective mainboard. I had it replaced . Also dont over due the cpu gunk you put on. I did that. After the tech checked it out he said I put too much on he reapplied it. Its easy to make them just was my first time. Id buy from a local place that sells cheap. So if you do have issues you can have them test the parts if theres a problem. |
