I agree that it's not action packed, but nonetheless a great story. And the visual style is simply amazing, setting the standards for space movies, including the other two movies I mentioned.

I think this list sums it up, although I would kick Event Horizon and add Back to the Future or even Donnie Darko. Fantastic planet was the first sci fi movie I can remember watching as a kid. I was 6 when I went to see it.
