He will loose... he would have to go after the poeple who coded apache/microsoft/the creators of bind/ECT.

Not the people who SET somthing in a config file.

Scumbags.

Don't see why you couldn't mention his attorney's name. Greg Picconelli and group. The same guys at the show. Anybody seeking advice may want to choose someone that DOESN'T have Brian Shuster as a client

"WWW" is a sub-domain. There is plenty of documentation about sub-domains before 1998. From what I'm reading about the patent, is that he is talking about wildcard sub-domains. I'm not sure when the wildcard (*.domainname.com) came out for sub-domains. For example, I have wildcard sub-domains for all of my domain names (I suppose I'll get a letter now). For example:
http://fightthepatent.adult-cybergames.com
http://anythingforthesubdomain.adult-cybergames.com

I didn't fully read the patent. Just glanced over it pretty much. So I could be wrong on what the whole patent is about.

I thought they were talking about you at first Larry. First thing that came to mind when they said Larry for some reason (must be the lawyer thing).

Looks like they're talking about Hustler Larry. Just in case somebody comes up with the wrong Larry like I did.

tootie 03-12-2004 12:49 PM

Get in touch with the person who owned Free Site Network free host back in 1998. I met my husband in October 1998 and several MONTHS before I met him I had a bunch of subdomains at FSN. If CuteFTP had a log that included when I last logged into a server I MIGHT have proof of when I used one of them. There were several other free hosts I used back then with subdomains that I still have in my CuteFTP. Anyone know anything about CuteFTP logs? Does it log the time/date of your last login?

Do you resemble the comment of being a Larry that people "run up to shake his hand or get his autograph or kiss his ass at internext. "

:1orglaugh

I remember shaking your hand, but didn't see anyone doing the autograph or ass kissing thing.

Here is a document about wild card sub-domains and subdomains in general.
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1033.html
That was back on November 1987

Rich 03-12-2004 01:05 PM

hmm, isn't www just the default subdomain?

Rictor 03-12-2004 01:07 PM

I hate subdomains. Mostly used by TGP cheaters.

liquidmoe 03-12-2004 01:08 PM

50 subdomains

There is no such thing as a default subdomain. "www" has to be put into the DNS and webserver config as a sub-domain. If it wasn't put in, then only the domain name can be pulled up and you wouldn't be able to reach the site via www.domainname.com.

I setup wicked-angel.com as a example.
With "www": http://www.wicked-angel.com
Without: http://wicked-angel.com

liquidmoe 03-12-2004 01:13 PM

Complete and utter nonsense.

No, you can setup a website to just be http://domain.com

WWW part is what people have been trained to type in.

I have read where some people thought typing www. was redundant and therefore didn't put in DNS entries to map WWW. to their IP when a surfer typed it in.

You need to put in a DNS entry to map WWW.domain.com to the correct IP. Same true if you were doing mail.domain.com, etc

What remains to be heard are the patent infringement claims.

Those that received the letters need to have an attorney get that information, since their first letter was to just respond within 20 days of receiving notice.

Most likely none of us =)

as far as i understood the patent is targeting companies that offer automated subdomain hosting with wildcards...Sent to legal to get a more indepth understanding just in case.

Larry Walters has been banging his head against the wall for so many years, warning webmasters about 2257 issues, government prosecution, etc.. more so than the 14 posts his stats show.

Pardon my ignorance, but wouldn't the Wayback Machine (archive.org) be effective for this? For example: archive.org has archives of chat.yahoo.com dating back to December 1997. Wouldn't this essentially be a prime example of prior art? Or no?

Is there a law against abusing the patent system?

If not, then they need to make one.

People like this need to be forced to pay huge fines.

I'm going to patent the 'scroll' so if you've been scrolling on any website please let me know. They are infringing on my poptential patent! :winkwink:
