My cat has a broken leg.

I'm falling apart right now, my cat is going to have to get some surgery to fix the bone. I'm not sure how much it will cost, but I'll finance it until the day I die if I have to.

He was outside, lounging around as I paid the rent. (Landlord lives up the hill from me, so he followed me up) Landlord's cat goes apeshit and starts growling, snarling, etc. and chases my cat down the hillside. My cat loses his footing and falls, and we hear this agonized scream, sounded like a woman's scream.

He gets up and tries to kick ass, but I see he's only on three feet, so I go and break it up, and his right front leg is dangling uselessly.

Vet said if I can't afford the surgery, they'll put him down for me. Sorry, but I don't repay almost 4 years olf love and devotion by killing him because I can't afford the surgery. No, this is not a handout thread, I'm venting and upset because I can't do shit for the cat until tomorrow when the vet can see him.

I probably should get insurance for them, but right now, I'm going to have to figure a way to make sure his surgery is going to be paid for, because I'll be damned if I let them kill him over a broken leg!

That's soooo not what you need right now [or any other day]. Often times you can find vets that will do work for free... or do work and accept payment later. ...or even a work/trade.

If I were you, I'd start calling different vets in your area that have a reputation of being flexible. Maybe a local animal shelter could help you, too. dunno

I'm sorry that you'e having to go through this. Good luck!

we had a prob here with the cat next door, it would attack/chase our cat and eventually one day we came home and htere was blood on the doorstep.. and no cat.. we though it was dead somewhere.. about 1 month later we found him up the road.. alive.. took him home and fattened him up.. now locked inside.. after a few phone calls the local council gave us a cat trap ( big metal cage thingy ) that we can use to catch the fucking flea bag next door.

Hope the kitty will be okay. If you don?t have the money to pay, find a new vet and say you found the cat and you are not rich but would like to help out. Also, say if the owner doesn?t claim the cat, you would like to adopt the cat.

It worked for a friend when her cat got hit by a car. I thought it was pretty shitty to lie but she used my vet and I am charged $350.00 every time the vet feels that my cat needs his teeth cleaned so the pro bono work at least went to a friend.

BTW, never heard of an outdoor cat breaking a leg running away downhill and I thought my indoor cat was stupid for not knowing how to climb a tree.

Thank you everyone.

The hill is quite steep and very rocky. He wasn't prepared for the surprise charge of the other cat and lost his balance.

The vet said that since he's not in shock and is responding to me and the husband as he normally would except for the pain that he'd be okay to wait overnight so that some of the swelling will slow and a clear xray can be taken. The xray can determine the extent of the damage, (though by the way the foot is dangling and unuseable, I'd say it's a clean, complete break). Once we know how bad it is, the surgeon can go in and take care of it. We're looking at between $100-$2500 depending on the damage done.

Thank you all for your support. I really appreciate the kind words and thoughts.

My cat don't understand nothing so I would never let him go out . Once he was under a running car and he wasn't even scared...

But seriously that's sad . As much as I like my animal I wouldn't spend 2500 $ on a surgery ... Animals are animals and they can be replaced.

3 years ago, my dog Punkin had discs rupture in her spine, which then pinched 2 nerves and paralyzed her back legs. We have an animal neurosurgeon in town who said there was a 15% chance she would walk again, but we had no choice, we couldn't give up on her, so we put the $3500 on a credit card, and guess what? She can not only walk, but run, jump, and play just as well as she could before it happened. She just turned 6 on Valentine's Day.

sorry about what happened. I remember when I was a kid we had a cat that used to like to sleep on the sidewalk after the sun had been warming it up. One day someone drove onto the
fucking sidewalk and ran her over! Now I have one persian which never goes outside.

Sorry to hear about your cat, Tala. I know how you feel. I had the cutest little orange and white kitten, just a baby, while I was still living at home with my parents. A neighbor found her crying in the ditch by the side of the road shivering in the rain. She was almost drowning in a huge puddle. He brought her to me because he knew I liked animals.

My dad wouldn't let me bring her inside because she had fleas and she was too young for any flea products.

She was precious. I named her Sunshine because she was a sweet little ball of sunshine, all orange and white, with cute little sky blue eyes. And she would meow like crazy at the door when she was lonely and wanted to play.

I'd only had her about a week when I heard her crying outside like she usually would when she wanted attention. I was watching a TV show that only had a couple of minutes left and I thought I'd just wait until after it was over to go out and play with her but I heard her cry again and it didn't sound like it usually did. It was higher pitched and scared. I ran to the door and opened it and there was my landlord's nasty, mangy terrier, Snoopy, standing over her as she twitched violently in convulsions. I grabbed my dad's rifle which was beside the door and started out but he grabbed it before I could get out the door. (I never would have killed an animal, I was just angry and wanted to scare the hell out of the landlord for letting his mutt run loose when there was a leash law.) All I could do was scream, "Your mutt killed my kitten you fucking bastard!" as loudly as possible to my landlord who was in his yard. His house was on a hill several hundred yards away from ours. My dad told me to get my ass back inside before I pissed the landlord off.

I went back inside and started sobbing and my dad met the landlord in the yard. A few minutes later he came in and told me the landlord said he would pay to take her to the vet and I told my dad that if there was ANYTHING they could do for her, he'd better damned well do it if he valued the life of his mutt, and if there was nothing they could do he could pay to have her put to sleep. My dad brought her to me so I could kiss her goodbye.

About an hour later he came home and told me that the landlord refused to pay to have her treated because she had broken ribs and a broken leg and it would have been over $400, but it only cost like $60 to put her down. She was gone and I was PISSED.

Every time that dog saw me he'd tuck his tail between his legs and run away and hide. He must have been able to sense how angry I was.

While it's not the optimal solution, one option would be to splint the leg with big popsicle sticks and wrap it up with medical tape for the night (make sure you have it set as straight as possible, of course).
If you think you have it *really* straight, you could try going to the pharmacy or craft store and getting some of that quick-cast stuff and putting your own cast over her leg. (Shave the leg first.)

I really believe cats have 9 lives, they have amazing healing abilities.. don't let the vet rape you for 2500..definately call around and see what other options are available. If its a clean break, no surgery should be required.. unless they cant put casts on animal legs.
a month ago I found my cat outside barely alive bleeding from his eyes, ears, nose and mouth.. his eyes were popping out of his head and I thought he was surely going to die on me..

Hubby would not let me take him to the vet and was ready to shoot him and bury him.. he amazingly lived through the ordeal , a few teeth are missing and his one eye doesnt shut all the way.. but that cat took a mighty blow to the head that should have killed him.

Tala, its gonna be allright..kittys are tough little creatures and I am sure yours will heal just fine.. It's just hard to see them in pain.
Hope Kitty is doing better tomorrow (insert "hug" smiley here)
