Because dalnet banned the porn IRC channel name which was where people traded stolen passwords for porn sites. So the people running the channel renamed it pr0n and it just stuck and migrated to other networks like Undernet wh3r3 3v3ry 74|ng is spelled fucked up and that gave it legitimacy as a cool hacker term.
