The Camaro was discontinued. That's someone's computer drawn fantasy concept. It'll never happen.

Like Veteran's Day said: they don't discontinue successful cars.

too bad, I would definately buy one...

for those who want to know, the production of the F body was actually stopped not necessarily due to GM's direct decision to remove the camaro, but due to the fact that they had to close the canadian plant that _produces_ the camaro.

the reason the mustang outsold the camaro is simple. it was a cheap car. you could get into a basic v6 manual stripped mustang cheaper than a base-model camaro. and everyone from 16 y.o. girls to great grandmas were (are) getting in on the action. hell, some families would buy several at a time. and why not get a piece of american history for each kid when it's cheaper than a new corolla?

with the extra price of the camaro generally came extra performance. and the sad part is, it wasn't a whole lot more expensive :(

they're both nice cars tho, and i hope the camaro makes a comeback. GM has been replacing it with things like the GTO, SSR (which is a pretty nice replacement, but not the same), and they've got a new roadster concept that could be promising. they even thought about bringing back the bel-air with a mucho retardo I-5 turbo and a body that looked like a cross of a late-model malibu and a poor attempt at retro 57 bel-air convertible. but i see gmc is making a truck with an i-5 now :)

in my opinion, over the years, from best to worst, i'd rank it the models this way:

1 - 1st generation
2- 3rd generation (i'm biased ;) )
3 - 4.5 generation

and #4 is tied between 2nd generation and early 4th gens. i've never been a fan of the 2nd gens, but the nasty "geo" front end and ugly wheels they slapped on most 4th gens really made it a poor looker. although some of the slp units with racing strupes and 5-spoke vette wheels looked fairly decent, the rest sucked (even the colors weren't that great on most).

and if anyone's else is wondering, that color combo on the green is a classic color as well :)

Shoehorn! 03-10-2004 07:15 PM

Wow, that thing is fucking awesome. Espescially the color. :thumbsup

That's a concept, not the production model. Although the production model is still extremely beautiful, it doesn't compare to that concept.

I got to sit in the production model 3 weeks ago in Toronto at an auto show. Fucking beautiful!

Just found this quote somewhere... pretty interesting:

"From what I understand, the main thing that killed the F-body wasn't poor sales or any specific issues with the car - any issues with the car could have been addressed during a redesign (which was due anyway) and a new version would have likely spiked sales as well.

The main issue was that the Quebec plant that built them was only capable of building F-bodies. It wasn't economically feasible to retool to introduce another product into the plant. Having a second product would have meant that when demand eased for Camaros and Firebirds, the capacity could have been used for another car. Without that flexibility, the plant became unprofitable at 80,000 cars a year - there was just too much unused capacity.

While the GTO will only sell 18000 units this year, it is built in a plant in Australia that produces the near-identical Monaro for the domestic market. Plus, that basic platform is the foundation of a whole bunch of cars in Australia. So, it's not like the plant is only building 18000 units; if anythign adding demand in another region (North America) is just one more way to insure the plant will stay productive and profitable.

I've heard (but not confirmed) that the CAW contract in Quebec stated that GM could not simply move F-body production somewhere else without a huge cost penalty. Thus, the only way to get out of the plant and its idle capacity was to kill the F-body for a couple of years. If GM can find a market, the name (at least the Camaro) will likely come back and address looks/ride/packaging concerns. And it will likely be built in a plant along side some more prosaic sedan to insure that when sales goes down (as they nearly always do when a sporty car hits its third year), the capacity can be used to produce another line. "

reynold 03-10-2004 07:22 PM

I'll bet my life on that car!

bingo.

and i don't think the mustang is a total piece of crap, although i'm not a ford fan and would never own one. i just prefer the chevy.

i used to hang out with a couple mustang familes, they mostly had first gens. in fact, one had a completely beautiful 68 mustang. it was an awesome restore. unfortunately, it was a dog. he put a truck crate 302 in it with an edelbrock dual-4bbl. the carbs killed it so much it spits raw fuel out the tailpipes, even with a reduction linkage to the 2nd card :):)

but you have to admit, dual quads on anything looks damn cool :)

if i remember my math, a holley 850 will run a 302 to like 8000 rpm or something... lol. so many people use so much overkill on their motors :)

Interesting. From what I heard, the 4th gen f-body didn't meet 2003 crash standards. That, mixed with poor sales, (Suv's totally outsold them) Chevy discontinued them.

Real shame. With the underestimated HP the LS1 camaros put out, (98+) they were said to be the best performance-dollar car out on the market.

I'd agree, from all i've read at ls1tech.com.
