It took me about 10 tries before I did it. Anybody got any tips for the long haul? I'm at about a 1.5 months and gettin' the urge again.

I have smoked on and off for about 9 years, taking yar and and half off here and there. I was never a heavy smoker, maybe max 4 a day, but it was still hard to quit. You have to want to do it for yourself and not for anyone else. Another tip is to surround yourself with friends who are also non-smokers, this will help. And try not to go to places that people smoke, bars etc.... If that doesn't work, try lolipops, or distraction of any kind.

im on like day 6 of this streak... ive quit before for like 9 months, then smoked only a day at a time on the days of each of my microsoft exams, didnt feel the urge after that and stayed free for a few more months, so i was feeling in control and i smoked another day for one other exam and then i just got sucked back in, drank at a bar and smoked... i was in control, no big deal... right.Originally posted by SPeRMiNaToR

anyway i just stopped again after i dont even know how long, maybe a year of smoking on and off, i wish i had never started again, im sure at a month and a half you feel a lot better than you did when you smoked, and you can breathe better, i know i am even after only a few days, the difference is remarkable... thats the main thing that kept me going when i quit for a long time... i knew i wouldnt really enjoy the cigarettes and i didnt want to stop enjoying breathing with ease and not hocking up mad shit... the nicotine patch and nicorette losenges help a lot too
the patch is better if you can only get one, try that shit... its cheaper than smoking and dont go back, you will regret it... i did and everyone i know who did doesComment

I quit smoking cigs 2 years ago but then I got more addicted to pot which I used to replace the cigs. It's been a little over 3 weeks since I quit the pot too, and now I'm smoke free. It's a long process and you will never be over the urge to smoke. Once you get comfortable with this idea, it may become easier. In any case you are doing the right thing and you will likely live a longer, healthier life. Keep at it and good luck

sure does.. also if u get cravings.. do something that will keep you occupied - i've read studies that say strong cravings last for soemthing like 5-10 mins and if u can delay past that period by drinking water(slowly) and delaying / doing something else.. you can get past the worst of the cravings..Originally posted by exspamr

i've been off them for 11 months.. i used them a lot at times when i wanted a break, or was waiting for something.. they are like little rewards.. the chemicals trigger the brain to make us think we've done something good.Comment

I gave up 6 years ago. Everytime I have had the urge I have reminded myself how bad that shit was for me and how I now have more energy, better skin, teeth, hair, breath, sense of smell and taste etc and I have greatly reduced my chances of cancer etc..

Get your doc to prescribe the inhaler for you. Not only does it better deliver nicotene your system is craving, the white plastic holder becomes a "substitute" cig.
When I quit in 1999, I found that I was VERY ORAL and really needed something in my mouth (ok..insert your own joke here!).
The inhaler was great because not only did I go through the same physical sensation of smoking (inhaling in through something in my mouth), I found that just carrying it around with (without any cartridges in it even) was great. Sort of became my pacifier..I carried it in my mouth everywhere! Looked just like a white cigarette holder..so didn't really attract much attention.
But it FINALLY allowed me to quit for good..after going through the whole gum and patch routine that didn't work.
Haven't smoked since or had the urge either (knock on wood!)

i always wanted to try that... does it have the restrictions of the losenges? ie: you cant eat or drink for at least 15 minutes before you take one? i find that thats the worst part of the losenges because at this stage it does me no good when i drink, which is why i favor the patch... i also tried the nicotine gum and that shit is fucking terribleOriginally posted by Centurion

Stay away from smoking environments. Also, until you've beaten the urge altogether, try to stay away from things that you associate the most with smoking, like coffee and alcohol.Whitehat is for chumps

I quit 5 months ago after being sick with a flue.
Smoke didn't give me as much pleasure after being sick, so I decided what the hell. If there ain't no fun in it, then why should I keep smokin'...

I smoked for 10-11 years and was eventually smoking 3 packs a day... every day. I tried quitting numerous times but was unsuccessfull. One morning I woke up and I was coughing up brown shit and could barely breathe... and I was 28 at the time. That was the wake up call I needed. I threw out what smokes I had left in the pack. That same day I went to the local bicycle shop and bought myself a decent mountain bike. I started off slow but eventally got up to doing 10 miles every day. I also joined a gym. I took charge of my health. I look and feel great.
I had to stay away from bars for the first few weeks and I stopped drinking coffee too. I had the after meal cravings but never gave in. Always have some gum handy and chew it when you get a craving.

No..no restrictions like that with the inhaler. That's the nice thing about it. Like most, after a meal or with coffee, greatest time for the urge to show up..and it made it nice to have something IN your mouth you inhaled on and got actual nicotene that way.Originally posted by exspamr

So..you are satisfying 2 things at once this way.
If you can't do it cold turkey..I HIGHLY recommend the inhaler.
