lol man, i gotta admit, i thought it was a little funny at 1st too... but i also thought it was a good article and i agree with alot of what you said... i can tell by your reaction that you actually seem to be a pretty good guy who cares about what he does... i can respect that

i think leased content CAN suck... that majority of what ive see has been bad, there is some good stuff out there... even with the bad stuff ive seen, i think it wouldnt be so bad if they gave the leaser more control over the presentation of the feeds and shit... maybe they do moreso now... its been a few years since i really checked into anything leased

Don't agree 100% about the leased feeds but everyone has their own opinion on how a members area should work. Variety is what makes the internet so interesting.

some points for discussion:

- I blame the whole development of the industry on leased feeds.

- Most of the paysite owners and webmaster programs think that their prospective customers are idiots

- But: Exclusive content doesn't necessarily result in better conversions and higher retentions

At no point in my article do I mention exclusive content. Personally, we have a mix. We shoot some exclusive stuff but I also buy a lot of content and just chop it up and put it into the member's area so it looks exclusive. The point is for the member to be able to quickly navigate around the site and find what they want and watch it the way they want. I hate a page with a bunch of links to feeds that open in different windows with different navigational structures and playback formats. It's sloppy.

Nice. You broke it down real well. The own versus renting was very powerful but add in that you constantly need to feed the webmasters content to push you and it is a very compelling argument to buy the stuff.

What about upselling in the members area? That can also look like shit. I hate that when the surfer thinks they are still in the members area but they are now in an upsell. Makes for nice money but it has to hurt retention.

We have a single link in our member's area for additional items. If someone clicks that link a new window opens where we have the one-on-one chat stuff and other upsell items. We do not mix them with everything else. In otherwords, I agree with you 100%.

It's tough to talk about anything else right now.

Couple things come to mind about this thread and CJ(rick).

a) right on the money about lease versus buying license. Buying licensed content gives you teh chance to control how your members see and utilize and interact with your content. We've gone through great lengths to make content that is compatible with your system, provided a mryiad of options and file sizes and such so you can customize it for your users.

Who knows your users better than you? Nobody.


b) A year later, the content you buy licenses for won't be useless. That's a myth. There are new surfers every day, don't we use this argument in every other facet of our industry? Same is true for the pictures and videos they see. They are new to someone, always.

c) CJ is by far the most professional group we've ever dealt with in terms of specifying what they need, on a content deal, and what their technical and functional specs are on a product they pay for.

I wish all companies in this industry had their game together the way rick and co do at cj.

We are redesigning our entire members areas and adding more of our own exlcusively shot content and we are buying new stuff from www.WorldWideContent.com . They have great new stuff we havent seen before on other sites....
