judging from some of the posts i've seen, it looks like some GFYers live (or have lived) in Costa Rica. any tips on purchasing a property out there?

i'm looking for a nice/new 2 bedroom villa, on (or very close) to the beach, with easy access to hiking trails. would only be living there a couple months/year. not looking to spend more than 300K... does this sound reasonable? what's the high speed internet situation like? if you've got some experience with C.R. i'd love to hear your recommendations, and/or any realtors you can recommend. thanks

Just so you know,

I once saw a cockroach almost as long as a dollar bill, and about an inch and a half thick. It was a fast mother fucker. We eventually caught it and executed it via poolside fire.

there seems to be no lack of strange insects in any tropical climate.

I just returned from another trip from Costa Rica a week ago for the express purpose of finding property. I'll be happy to summarize my findiings and contacts in an email. The biggest thing I am struggling with is the "gringo tax", it seems that pricing is inflated for foreigners.

I'll drop you an email from the office tomorrow.

Just briefly, the nicest place I've stayed thus far is at the Los Suenos Marriott Resort near Jaco. They have probably the nicest marina and golf course in Costa Rica. The compound is new and immaculate. I believe they are also adding a private airstrip currently which would provide convenient access from San Jose. I cannot speak to the availablility of hiking trails, since I was there to fish primarily. Condos start at 350k.

I'm not sure if they have a website dedicated to their properties for sale, but the following links have a few nice pictures.

I have a beach house in Nosara, Guanacaste. ICQ me 210877237. Just finished building 1800sqft and pool. Wife and I were in the Peace Corps there from 88-91. Been going back every year since. We now try to spend 4 months there a year.

I just sent you an email with some real images, etc. I'm not sure about availability, but there was significant new construction happening during our visit. We intend to follow-up this week through one of our contacts in Panama. I'll share any info I come across.

I'll need to read the documentation I brought back, but I believe one can also obtain a membership to use the resort facilities also, which is a nice bonus.

http://www.southcoastrealty.co.cr/li.../escaleras.htm I lived in this area. Its awsome, nearby you can see the Atlantic and Pacific, at the same time, from a mountaintop. The beach is very nice and the jungle is super. I know you can get satelite internet and I think dialup as well. Ill have to ask my uncle if cable and/or DSL is in the area yet. There are plenty of Americans here.

Not much can beat lounging in your hammock, drinking a cup of good coffee, and watching the sunset from a beachview home's porch in Escaleras. ( i sound like an ad) No, seriously, its really super there, I love it, I kind of want to move back. In Costa Rica, beach view is better than beach front.
