I start with "I own a software company" (my background is in programming) Then they usually ask: "What kind of software" then I vary it. Depending on the person. Usually I pull out as many 4 syllable words as possible and confuse them so badly with my abstract programming terminology that they feel dumb and are sorry they asked.

When we moved into our new office 2 years ago they local news paper did a half page article on our company. It was hilarious to read the article. I confused the writer so much.

Unless you know someone is comfortable with you asking private questions about your life, I think it's rude to ask someone what they do for money or to support themselves.

It has become so commonplace and accepted as a conversation piece when it shouldn't be. In many other countries they get offened if you ask this and don't know the person well or the family.

In the old, old days, your station in life was worn on your sleave or apparent in your wardrobe, (ix. Knights had crests, blacksmiths wore leather vests,) so there was no need to ask.
