How long could you live off your savings?

If your work went belly up tomorrow, how long would you be able to live comfotably from your savings without getting another job?

I've been thinking alot about investing in my future recently, I probably should have done that from the start but I was busy enjoying myself and with hindsight I should have kept more than I have. I was just wondering what you guys thoughts were...

Don't give any personal figures, just an estimate of a time scale.

about a year for me. When I just started in tis buisness I would spend all the money I was making on bullshit and didn't invest anything until a few months ago when I reliased that if you spend it it's not coming back but if you invest it smartly it will be coming back to you over and over again.

SO now I invest 80% of what I make.

well first is real estate, second shares and third buisness.

But the first one is the money saved if I lose money on number 2 and 3. I don't touch or finance my real estate into my buisness so if I lose I lose but I still have money from real estate rentals and if I choose to sell it I have money to live off.

Hope that helps.

Savings???

I juggle my on and off-line money and several different ventures, I don't have any savings but could sell my share in the farm and live very comfortably for a very long time

Quite a wide variety of answers.

I would like to start investing in property but I'm still only 20 so I think I'll hold off a while longer yet.

Without my kids, I could live homeless and off the land.. but with the kids, I would be on a street corner slinging some one elses pussy...lol.

I have too many kids.. can't save shit..but hubby has a 401 k that is pretty nice. We jacked that up to 8 % in January.

The UK laws on farm subsidies are rapidly changing, if you want to make an easy investment look at local land rather than property which will cost more.

Yeah good point, I think I've been watching too many episodes of Property Ladder hehe. I'd like to get into property development, start small and do things right

comfortably, without touching my investments or RSPs, i could sustain my self for about 6-8 months.

comfortably, by cashing in my investments and RSPs, about 12 months. 15-16 months if i sell off some of my "luxuries" (video games systems, second tv, etc).

if i was really desperate, i could move to a much cheaper appartment in july when my lease is up, and by dipping into my investments/RSPs and selling off luxuries, i could sustain myself for at leas 24 months.

it may not be much, but for me, it's a lot. i'm actually surprised when i think about it.

The way I am living my life right now I wouldn't last long. If I took it easy not very long either but longer than if I spent like I do spend now.....

Everything is beginning to settle down for me now and I earn more and more every month so I'm hoping in about a year I can come back to this thread and say a lot longer.

But hey you already knew all that honey didn't you?
