Pic of the First Phone Sex Server

Found this pic today. Wow 18 years ago! There were only 100 900 numbers allocated for the entire US. We had 2 of them.

To the far right, an original IBM PC running DOS with the first digital audio cards developed for the new audiotext industry.

All the recorded phone sex fantasy messages were stored on the IBM PC then sent digitally to AT&T's NOC through the black boxes to the right of the PC, and then they were broadcast on AT&T's nationwide 900 pay-per-call network.

The mouse was invented by Doug Engelbart. Apple paid $40,000 for the license to the patent. That was one of Steve Jobs coups for apple.

Indeed. That IBM PC/AT was so primitive by today's standards. The AT ran about two-and-a-half times faster then the PC XT, thanks to its 6 MHz, true 16-bit, 80286 CPU. 128K RAM. 10 Mb Hard drive.

Despite how basic it was, it did the job perfectly, handling about 2-3 million minutes a month without a glitch.

Yeh, pretty amazing. I used to look at that PC and think I can't believe its doing all the work and broadcasting everything for the first time digitally.

Before this 976 numbers were broadcast on looped industrial cartridge machines.

That's really impressive!

How small were these recorded messages that they fit on a 10 meg HD?

And if I understand correctly, people called the 1-900 #, paid $X amount per minute and only listened to a recording? Man, some people are hard up!

Awesome!

The last few weeks I saw a few TV ads, got spams and exit consoles promoting phone sex with regular cellphone numbers. I wonder how it works and how much they get per minute from the telecom.

There's also this site with HOT models posing non-naked (it turns me on, way better than porn) and with the cellphone numbers to hear something from the model.

You are most likely holding prior art for many IVR/telephone patents.

3 to 5 minutes each. The recordings were pretty darn hot. Guys would call back like crazy.

Sample of an original recorded phone sex message

We created a lot of concepts that have been knocked off by others.

We had one company attempt to claim they had a patent on recorded audio years after. We said "Oh really, want to place a little wager on that?" Sent them some supporting docs and never heard from them again.

I can't remember but I know we got jacked pretty good on it cause the sound cards were brand new technology developed expressly for the audiotext industry that was emerging.

I think it was around $10K and we bought one backup box also.

Back then you had to pay AT&T $30,000 for each 900 number also.

So AT&T made $3 Million just off the upfront fees alloting the first 100 numbers.

The cost of PCs in those day was out of site. Remember the North Star - If memory services, it was like 5 grand for comuter and printer. Of course that was with dual five and quarter floppies.

$3K for an HP Laserjet III

I had the HP Laserjet III. That was the most solid printer ever. What a workhorse that baby was.

One-way phone sex. Interesting concept, I guess I never would have imagined that would sell.

HP is NOT building to that quality anymore.

Of course HP really isn't HP anymore, At least in my opinion. They sold off their start and core biz along time ago. HP started in a garage making and selling test equipment. An American Dream come true. Think they started with like $8k. Maybe less?
