The great Florida migration??

What's going on? So many people I have heard about are moving to Florida.

My friends are going, people from this industry etc.
What is so great about florida and where can I find some more info on it?
Like the chamber of commerce for FL or something.

Thanks!

Main reason for us is the weather, and as you said, so many webmasters are already there that makes for a great party.

As soon as our house sales we are on our way.

Reasons? I guess it's old for me. It's a good place to visit and party, but living here is a completely different story. If you're young and single, Lauderdale or South Beach is the place to be. But if you're older and more into business, it gets old, fast.

Summers here are brutal. 100+ with high humidity. And then there's Hurricane Season from July to late October...you may never get hit by a strong one, but always having to monitor these things is a big fucking pain in the ass.

Drivers can't drive for shit down here. Traffic is pretty high. And some areas you need an interpreter.

Cost of living is pretty reasonable though.

No state income tax Only places with better weather year-round are hawaii and california, and california has earthquakes, high state income tax and high cost of living.

No state income tax is probably one of the main reasons. Plus if you've lived forever in northern states, having constant weather is pretty nice. I lived in FL growing up and don't plan on going back - I prefer seasons.

I've lived in Boca Raton, Miami and Fort Lauderale.

I do not recommend Miami unless:
- You speak fluent Spanish
- You enjoy massive traffic jams

I currently live in Parkland (2 minutes from Boca Raton) and it's a beautiful community... the traffic is reasonable, everyone speaks English and there aren't any bad neighborhoods in Parkland. It's also right near the Sawgrass, 95 and the Turnpike so it's easy to get around.

Lived in LA for 8 years, Scottdale AZ for 3....have lived in Miami for 3 and I'm staying here....

Housing is very reasonable for what you get (like living on the water ) (esp compared to LA)

No state income taxes

Has some international flair, and edgy entrepenural feeling (esp. compared to AZ)

Geographically the center of hemisphere (easy flights to Europe, South America, NY, LA, Africa, Middle East)

Great weather (as long as you live right on the water...that's key)

Nice selection of crazy fun places (the Grove, downtown Miami, south beach, hollywood, fort lauderdale, etc.....)....but also nice quiet neighborhoods to live in.

If you like boating....which I love....it's one of the best places in the world. (waterside bars and resturants....Bimini 3 hours away...the Keys....the Bahamas are 6 hours away....warm all year..etc....)

Of course there are downsides....EVERY place has them, but I love it and I'm staying.

south florida is sorta like southern california, but the differences are. no state income tax. blacks instead of mexicans. florida has a much better winter than california, but californias summer is alot better.

more like cubans and peurto ricans instead of mexicans. if you can get used to the humidity, rain, thunderstorms, lightning, hurricanes, floods, etc... you should be alright.

Couple points:
I live in a retirment community area.
The average age in Qualicum (5 minutes away) is 65. That is the AVERAGE age.
Here I think it's like 50. So I am used to wayyy too many old people.

As far as the color of people living there- I am not racist. So I really could care less if red and orange people are living there.

What old people? I live in N. Miami on the intercoastal, and I hang in Miami and Fort lauderdale and I don't see any more old people than I saw anywhere else. if you go north to west palm each or Boca Raton....or over to Naples....that's another story. But in Miami/fort lauderdale? Nope

that area is the one exception. ft lauderdale/sunrise/miami. it's way too active for old people. the other 90% of florida is nothing but old people and drugs.

Economy, Cost of Living, Weather, Housing, GIRLS are DAMN NICE LOOKING, just a few of the advantages.

Florida is the best BY FAR in my opinion.

EDIT: I see the post about "Old People" - Not any more older people here than any other places. Sure you have communities where the older population choose to live...just like other states.

Reasons not to live in (Orlando) Florida...

Hot as hell
Humid as fuck
Rains every damn day
Mosquitos the size of bats and mean as killer bees
Every other car has an out of state plate, drives for miles with their blinker on, the map unfolded across the steering wheel and always slow down to look at every street sign.
I lived on a lake and the airboats sound like people are flying airplanes through your bedroom at night.

It's not so bad really, I still have my house there and hope to move back someday.

Did you know half a million people a year relocate to florida.

I'd be looking for a place on a lake, or in a quiet little area. I don't like big cities so I'd be shooting for a small community - lots of trees lots of lakes and rivers for boating- and yet still close to the ocean enough to get there if I need to in a couple hours drive.

Not saying I am moving there... just always looking for something new.

I agree on Orlando.....I have to live on the water, not inland. On the water it....
Rains MUCH less,
Breeze fights the humidity,
If it gets too hot, jump on the boat and get out on the water,
Mosquitos can't live in salt water,
etc....

How cheap? Have some numbers?

Just say a 3-4 bedroom, pool, garage, yard, nice neighborhood... the works. Don't know if you're familiar with real estate in SoCal, but if so, what would a $750k California place cost in Florida.

Look at the beach areas on the ocean north of fort lauderdale....up closer to boca/palm. Living inland in South Florida is not a great idea.

Better yet....spend time down here first and figure out what you like

Just say a 3-4 bedroom, pool, garage, yard, nice neighborhood... the works. Don't know if you're familiar with real estate in SoCal, but if so, what would a $750k California place cost in Florida.
figure about half.

For 750k in Fort lauderdale, you could get a GREAT 3/3 bedroom place w/pool, nice neighborhood etc....right on a canal just off the intercoastal with about 60 feet of boat dock.

In SoCal....getting a place on the water would be double or more.

and for 900k you can get a stunning place on the intercoastal itself that would go for 2 1/2 million in Socal

If you come down....give me a call. I would be glad to show you some areas....and heck, if you like boating, I'm always looking for any excuse to take mine out...
