Wireless Laptop Internet Connections?
What is the best way for me to have internet connectivity wireless with my laptop on the road?
If I have unlimited nights and weekends with Verizon Wireless, would getting their adapter make sense? |

Get a SprintPCS wireless card. It's like $80/month for unlimited data. Works everywhere. Way faster and smoother than using your cell phone as a modem.

I only travel so much and it's only on weekends. Not worth 80 dollars a month. Anything else?

I am kind of looking for something just on the weekends when I travel. Also, would be cool if I could add onto something onto my verizon wireless cell phone plan but I don't know what kind of deals they have for that.

I & a few of my friends all use verizon's wireless thing. I think it's called "BroadbandAccess", but it used to be called something else. It's a little card with an antenna & it's pretty sweet.
It's $79/mo & i dont use it very often, but it's nice being able to connect pretty much anywhere. It's definitely not as fast as broadband, but it's about 2x faster than 56k & really easy to connect. I can connect pretty much anywhere that I can get a cell phone signal. |

T Mobile Hot Spots Every starbucks in USA practically. Pay per day use or monthly unlimited for $39 ..if you sign a 1 year contract it's $29 unlimited If you are driving down the road and you need access then Verizon is your best bet for the best coverage. Buy their wirless card that fits in the PCMCIA slot ..the newest technology is 300 - 500 kbps with bursts up to 2 Mbps. the card is $250 and the service ranges from 39, 59 or 79 dollars per month 20 Mb download- 60Mb - or Unlimited |

no shit ?? fuck i'm only getting about 56k on EDGE network and slightly higher with the aircard on GPRS network at att. FreeHugeMovies, if you plan to use just on the weekend i still bet that you would use more than 60 mb of transfer. unlimited is what you would need. But test it out on smaller plan and see how much you're using. yeah wifi hotstop is another way for you to get online and its really fast. Make sure to get a wifi card with a/b and G. G is the newest and is a wider spectrum. You can probably use it from as much as a block away if not more from starbucks, but i havent tested it out yet. |

No real complaints on the T-Mobile wireless 802.11 service except that they don't run any WEP, and all the wardrivers know this.

What I do is just constantly scan for new APs, and associate with the strongest signal as I go. Working on a concept project with a couple of buddies that will automate detecting new reachable access points, maintain a list of all APs and their geographic location, and signal strengths of all available APs along side a few other goodies. The goal is to acheive something similar to the police departments Mobile Data Terminal. The MDT is where all squad cars use themselves as relays to transmit and receive data from their station to their laptops in the car and vice versa.
