Vancouver Voted Top City In World To Live (Again)

Vancouver's tops!

VANCOUVER (CKNW/AM980) -- Out of 130 cities all over the world, Vancouver has tied with Melbourne and Vienna as the number one city to call home.

According to a survey by the London-based Economist Intelligence Unit, Vancouver, along with the other two, are the best cities for expatriates to live.

The survey rated cities based on 12 different criteria, including housing, education, recreation, health, climate and terrorism. Vancouver got a perfect score in each category.

Montreal and Toronto were the only other Canadian cities listed in the top 15.

And another:

Whistler rated No.2 resort

Canadian Press

POSTED AT 11:05 PM EST Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004

Vancouver ? Whistler has been named the second best ski resort in North America by Ski Magazine's website.

The tony B.C. ski hill was nudged out of the running for the top spot by Vail, Colorado.

"With the continued strength of the American dollar, Whistler is a hard deal to pass up," Michel Beaudry wrote.

And, with the selection of Vancouver and Whistler as hosts of the 2010 Winter Olympics, Beaudry said the improvements coming to the 38-year-old resort will only make it better.

"The best bang for your buck in North America," Mr. Beaudry said one reader concluded.

Executive editor Greg Ditrinco told Vancouver radio station CKWX a great part of Whistler's attraction was its village. He called it ''very cosmopolitan, very urbane."

Whistler mayor Hugh O'Reilly said a silver medal from Ski is fine by him.

"We've sort of floated in and out of the top two or three for the past few years," he said.

"We usually duke it out with Vail," he added.

The west coast resort 90 kilometres north of Vancouver left some people cold, though. Between rain and fog, some skiers couldn't stomach Whistler, Mr. Beaudry reported.

The magazine's ratings took into account factors such as snow quality, terrain, lift service, weather, lodgings and on-mountain food.

No kidding. Parts are great, but others look like a shanty town. And those endless high rise apartment/condos are crappy looking. Sounds like a "best of the pseudo-socialist cities" poll.

Hmmmm maybe you should rethink that decision, because Vancouver D/T real estate is nuts . Every single , place we have bought sold , we got a huge profit ALOT like over 100K for some places . Like the Savoy on Richards , Richards Downtown Building about 4 yrs old building bought 2 bedroom before it was built for 168,000 sold for almost 300 K half a year ago .
Regardless if you plan to live here or just buy a place for investment its almost GUARANTEED you won't lose .
(vancity downtown of course + not shitty area + one of the newer high rise condos)
Your comment about bums and heroin addicts is just foolish every major city has that in their downtowns . There are certain areas vancity downtown like West Georgia / Pender and Yaletown the Pacific Blv Expo Area Has Very Few Of Those People ....

No doubt Vancouver real estate is a good investment.

Thinking of getting a condo there myself...

I fell in love with the city while commuting to there from Vegas.

Would give me an excuse to visit a little more often.

I live accross the street from one. Actually two, one on either side and they are big sandy ones and although a bit nippy, you can swim in the ocean. The biggest bonus of all is although the ocean and beach and largest urban wildnerness park in North America are all right here, I am still downtown in a fun cosmopolitan city.

well i just bought a new slopeside condo in Whistler. and now i'm interested in buying something in Van:

highrise condo, view of either ocean, or stanley park (or both). what area(s) should I be looking at? i don't know the city very well, been there half a dozen times over the past couple of years. Beach Ave a good area? Westend?

I was looking at a new development on Beach Ave - good idea?

also, i want to be able to WALK everywhere. to restuarants, beach, etc.

Get a place in Yaletown.. English bay - tons of eateries and bars - trendy - close to Robson and downtown core and a short drive across the bridge and you are in kits!

Downtown is safe... I live in Gastown...in a loft building 2 blocks south is the dreaded Hastings and Main.. units in my building start at 250,000 up to a Mil+ Tons of single women in my building that come and go on foot at all hours of the night. My gf walks my dog at late at night. Junkies don't throw needles at people like darts and all those BS stories you hear.

People scared to live in the downtown are pussies, more shit will happen to you in the burbs.

You should probably check out some places in the Coal Harbor area:

http://www.lestwarog.com/frames/coalframe.html

Some newly built ones there with views of Stanley Park and it's like a ten minute walk to the good shops/restaurants. No beach there but the park is only a short walk. I live over on Alberni and there really isn't anything you can't find within walking distance, especially good in the summer when traffic becomes a bitch.

I used to live over on Beach Ave, it's a bit more of trek if you want to walk downtown, 20+ mins but there is a beach over there, although I don't think it's all that great. Kitslano area is better for beaches.

thanks for the info

i've heard very good things about coal harbor as well. Where is English bay exactly? looking through the mls site, i've run across plenty of condos in both areas. checking out that link you posted now.

btw looking to spend 700K- 1M range. 2 bed + den (hopefully). yeah, i can't stand driving in traffic congestion - love to be able to walk everywhere day to day.

On March 1st, I'm moving into the building next to the building that DH was in while he was living here. It's just between English Bay and Sunset Beach, right down on Beach Avenue.

Which means... that this too, shall be the view from my balcony as of the beginning of March

Vancouver. Best City in North America to get your car broken into if visiting from the US.

Fucking car burglary gangs run rampant breaking into every car they can find with US plates.

Beware!

Well I heard that things got cleaner, less drugs and homeless people. The problem is that in order to get downtown, you have to drive through the worst part of Vancouver. Can be a scary place, ah yes, in the old times we used to go film hookers *cough* (too much time on our hands).
