Hey Girls - Good information for us all to remember....#77 ON YOUR CELL PHONE

Lauren was 19 yr. old and in college. It was the Saturday before New Year's. It was about 1 PM in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend when UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put on his light. Lauren's parents have 4 children (high school and college age) and have always told them NEVER to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but
rather wait until they get to a gas station, etc. So Lauren actually listened to her parents advice. Promptly she called # 77 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away.

She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was. There wasn't and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way. Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.

I never knew about the #77 cell phone feature. Especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a "SAFE PLACE." You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them (i.e., put on your hazard lights) and call # 77, like Lauren did.

Too bad the cell phone companies don't give you this little bit of wonderful information. So now it's your turn to let your friends know about # 77.

Bad advice. Basically an urban legend. The # to dial is 911. #77 is VERY limited as to what regions it does and does not work in. The moral of the story is true, never pull over for an unmarked. But the # to dial is 911.

Note: This does NOT work in all areas.

Here's a list of emergency cell numbers

911 will work virtually anywhere - it's what I would suggest gets called so you don't find out too late that #77 doesn't work.

No, but when she got out of the car, there was a metal hook on the door handle

While I'm all for self-preservation, the easiest thing to do is to call #911 in EMERGENCIES. They are not there to track cops for you. If you want to make sure the vehicle behind you is indeed a cop, you can program the local sheriff's number into your cell and call them. They can tell you if it's a cop/deputy.

Fake story, no fake cop would follow someone that isnt going to pull over with the light flashing for 10 minutes. Criminals arent that dumb.

Which is great if you don't drive outside your local area. Not to mention there are 3 different police departments where I live and in the Atlanta metro area, there are well over 20. Once you finished checking with all them....

IMHO if you're being followed by a suspicious car - flashing lights or not - and you can't pull into an area where there are a lot of people, dial 911. Period. Simple.

Some Criminals ARE that stupid:

A man from the town of Grand Forks, North Dakota, decided to travel to Fargo so that he could rob the First Community Bank. The criminal quickly scribbled a note demanding money and gave it to the teller. Frightened, she gave the man what he asked for and watched him run out of the door. Police were called and searches of the surrounding area turned up nothing. Upon reviewing the ransom note, it was noted that the message had been written on the perpetrator's bank deposit slip. Police traveled to the man's house and arrested him on his front porch.

Hmm...my local law enforcement can track both city and county. But you're right; if you're outside the local area, it would just be easier to call 911.
