they are very accurate in recreating facial tissue to the shape of a face off a skull. I did see a documentry where they were doing it and even did a modern skull they then compared his recreation to photos and he was almost spot on.

First the make a mould of skull from glay then they add pins to the clay model to where they believe the depth of the skin is fill it all in and have the shape of the face. It was quite interesting.
