So far this is what I *think* I need to do, can anyone tell me if this is right or not please? unplug everything unscrew case 2 drives in there, a switch on them both, they need to be re-set from primary to slave and vice versa (I'm hoping there is something on there that shows what I need to do!) power up, insert the OS discs and load windows copy all files from D to the new C will this work or will I kill my puter?

Chances are, if neither drive has been tampered with, they're set to 'cable select' as far as jumpers go, in which case you just need to switch the wide grey cables plugged into each drive, and then reboot. if that doesn't work, beside where those cables plugin, there's two rows of pins, with a plastic 'jumper' on them, you'll have to consult the docs for your hd to figure out how that jumper needs to be on there, but you should set them on cable select, and make sure that the one you want as the 'main' drive is plugged into where your old drive originally was. hope that makes sense, and good luck.

No they're not labeled as such your new drive should of had a plug on the pins.
Usually its on something called cable select, this means if you want the new drive to be the master then unplug the current one and replace it, this should swap them over, but you may then have problems with windows as the new drive as the master will not carry the operating system. I may be wrong.

No Problem !
The best thing going for drives is Partition Magic from Power Quest, The have saved me from losing all from a 40 gig western digital and got back all the (I thought )lost data on an old Maxtor. It (the software) allows you to set active, hide, resize, convert NTFS 2 fat 2 fat32 etc. mount backup partition. Name it! they also have rescue disk s that you make with 2 floppies that have a win98 type GUI, THESE HAVE ALSO COVERED MY A**. I can't tell you enough about this all in W-one-der. Oh it also comes with boot magic to use multiple OS's. I rarely buy commercial software but this is" all that ". http://www.powerquest.com I hope this will help P. |

Kelly I can walk you through the whole procedure to swap drives if you want I have 25 years experience as a licensed MSEE,
you can call or email or icq I also have some info on low level formatting and other esoteric details like which pin the jumper goes on , how to get into the BIOS etc. Psylosyphyr |

Actually ther are two IDE connectors on your mother board.
Primary and Secondary Each has a slave and Master Capability This will allow a total of 4 drives. You definately DO NOT WANT TO LEAVE THE HDD JUMPERS ON CS (cable select) In this mode the OS(operating system) will seek out the disk with the most currently used valid bootcfg. failing this it will go to the primary master first and look for a sector 63 boot log if it finds one it will boot it. I'm not a very good typist And there are some details that may need a diagram could I maybe FAX you or ? |

If you have a new HD drive installed, you may want to check the contents of the box. Many drive manufacturers include utility proggies which can help copy the data from one drive to another. They will also give you jumper settings fro setting up primary and secondary; if you are able to access both drives now then you are set to do the data transfer. You will just need to change the jumper settings after you've copied and verified the transfer. Hope it helps. |

there is a very simple procedure for this.
1) remove old drive, set it aside carefully. 2) install new drive, ensuring that it is set to primary master drive (or in the case of western digital drives, "single drive"). 3) install OS, programs, etc on new drive. 4) add old drive back into system, ensuring it's a slave device (it would be preferrable to add this drive to a secondary channel, instead of being on the same cable as the primary drive). boot up the new system and copy your necessary files over. do not copy over your windows system files from the old drive however, you're better off keeping the newer files from the fresh install. you're done. don't rely on 'cable select' - depending on the hardware it may not even work, and at best it can be relatively unreliable. it's the lazy person's way of making things work. always set your drives to master or slave. if it is a western digital drive, pay close attention to settings for "single drive". if it is the only drive on the channel, and you set it to master or slave, the drive will not be found by the system - only if it is set to 'single drive'. MOST modern drives have the full jumper settings on the case of the drive.

here is the real answer.
1. turn your computer off 2. put it in the car just the box not the monitor. 3. take it to a tech that knows what he's doing. 4. pay him to fix it Its that easy |
