Bono in trouble over 'fuck'

Michael Powell, President of the FCC, has to be the biggest idiot around. Now he wants to reverse the decision on Bono's exclaim 'really, really fucking brilliant', about ?The Hands That Built America? from ?The Gangs Of New York?.
First of all how stupid is it to even give this attention and now he wants to reprosecute.

Powell called on Congress to up obscenity fines on broadcasters to at least ten times the present maximum of $27,500 per violation

Rolling Stone reports that eleven Republicans have sponsored a resolution that asks the FCC to revoke the license of television stations that repeatedly air indecent material. And there is bill proposed by two other congressmen - Doug Ose and Lamar Smith> - that aims to completely ban, from all radio and network television broadcasts, the words: shit, piss, fuck, c***, cocksucker, motherf****r and asshole

Banning single words, this must be a new level of censorship.
Can someone please explain me where these people come from?

To me it's scary that people like this are being taken seriously.

He is still behing Bush in terms of stupidity - but he has risen in ranks lately. I dont understand what the big deal is - if you don't like what you see on TV or hear on the radio - TURN THE DAMN THING OFF!

It really isnt hard. Even the dumb kids can do it. Thats why manufactures put an on/off button on everything.

I called into a radio show and said "fuck" once and they didnt cut it off in time. They got really mad about it - but I thought it was funny.

Does that make it right though? Should prime time be littered with profanity, sexual refrences, and vulgarity for the sake of being vulger?

Every year television and radio are producing more and more of this type of entertainement and for what? To push the evelope? Hardly. I imagine it's more of a case of oneupmanship and trying to outdue each other for market share.

At what point does it become to much? Live sex on stage at the Super Bowl?

Point is if the media dosen't police it's self then the government will. With that said there are extrems on both ends. Those that would like to censor all media and those that think it should be free to show what ever it feels like. Common sense is somewhere in the middle is where it should be.

I got this in my email yesterday, it's kinda poignant.

With all the hub-bub about the superbowl half time show, thought this was a timely thought....
A few months before my 7th birthday, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small Arkansas town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this
enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted, and was around to welcome me into the world a few months later. As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind he had a special niche.

My parents were complementary instructors: Mom taught me the word of God, and Dad taught me to obey it. But the stranger? He was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies. If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always had the answers. He knew about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry.

The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind. Sometimes, Mom would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to her room and read her books. (I wonder, now, if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.) Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home. Not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our long time visitor however got away with four letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush. My Dad was a teetotaler who didn't permit alcohol in the home, not even for cooking. But the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly and pipes distinguished. He talked freely (much too freely) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing.

I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked, and NEVER asked to leave. More than forty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you were to walk into my parents' den today you would still
find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk, and watch him draw his pictures.
His name?

We just call him TV.

Young kids are alot smarter than adults think.

3 year old should know the difference between good or bad words. IMHO you see more violent stuff and iffy language in today's cartoons.

Some people still think that simpsons and south park are children programs. Thats how out of touch they are with their kids

Censorship on TV is a display of a fantasy world.

Everyone will hear any word while in school and you simply have to face it that using those words in the US simply is community standard nowadays. So all censorship for such words is simply idiotic.

I actually find other versions of censorship like only showing one side of e.g. Iraq war on CNN much more disturbing.
