What type of motorbike can I ride?
Unless you have already held a motorbike licence for one year, your first motorbike learner licence and provisional licence will be for a motorbike of 250mL engine capacity or less (RE class).

After you have held the RE class provisional or open licence for at least one year, you may learn to ride a motorbike over 250mL.

You must pass a practical riding test on the larger motorbike before your provisional or open licence will be endorsed to allow you to ride this larger motorbike.

Conditions for learning to ride a motorbike
You must ride under the direction of someone who holds and has held for at least one year a open licence for the size of motorbike you are learning to ride.
If this person is going to be a pillion or sidecar passenger, they must hold and have held the open motorcycle licence for at least two years.
Obey any conditions shown on the learner licence. This learner licence is only for learning on a motorbike, not a car or heavy vehicle.
The learner licence is valid for one year.
Always carry your learner licence when you ride.
Show it immediately to a police officer upon request.
Do not drink alcohol and then ride. You must have a zero blood alcohol content if under 25 years of age. You will face severe penalities if detected drinking and riding. For more information, check out the Anti-Drink Driving page.
