Bunkers during cold war times in US.

I am doing some research and was wondering if homes in the US have bunker systems during the cold war time or were there only public bunkers, or maybe none at all? Maybe one of you know something about it.

Bunkers are a little too heavy to carry off so most of those built remain. Although they have been turned into wine cellars and the like.

Ah, yes. That makes sense. Do you know if families got funding from the government to have bunkers in their homes?

Not too many bunkers in FL

however at the local airport, there were a few dirt mound bunkers hidden of in the woods surrounding the airport.. not sure what they were originally built for.. my guess was because of the whole Cuba thing with Russia back in the 50s

but I know in other areas of the states.. they used natural recourses such as caves and even coal mines as potential nuke bunkers...

It may be a little difficult to get a permit to build yourself a bunker system, but make sure to take pictures for us if you do. LOL.

It also depends on the city. In Arizona or Florida you won't find bunkers, except for the ones a few nuts built around the Y2K thing (I won't elaborate on that tho, LOL).

The east coast however is known to have bunkers. This links may help you on your research: http://www.project2000.netfirms.com/bunkers.htm

Of course people on the east coast were more prone to an invasion from Europe. Also, since the politicians are located in D.C.and are usually traveling around the New England States and the east in general, it was only natural to establish bunker/ safety zones for them. It is said that the President is able to get to a bunker within thirty minutes (I think) from anywhere in the US. I don't know if this is true though.

Here's an example of one of the Presidential bunkers: http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/cold.war...s/01/then.now/

Hope this helps

Kroy

I seriously doubt anyone got funding from the Government for these. I'm too young to know for sure, though.

Validus,

This might help your research a little, and if not, mail me, I've done the research on this before for another client.
