I don't have a Mac but I thought I'd espouse the benefits of Linux... I'm sitting here surfing the web and doing all my normal daily stuff, and there's a hardcore script running in the background that's been maxing the CPU out at 99% for the last 36 hours and box isn't any slower than normal and hasn't missed a beat. Can't do that in Windows!

I'm thinking of doing the same. The only thing that is stoping me is that I'm not sure if Microsoft Entourage X can connect to an MS Exchange server through normal protocals. I don't want to connect via IMAP. Does anyone here know the answer to that question? Unfortuanetly my entire organization uses MS Exchange so I'm locked into it.

Just curious. I'm an open minded kinda guy who enjoys using the PC, but what are the main advantages of the Mac? I wouldn't mind grabbing one if there is some sort of major advantage.

I mainly stick with PC because all the important business applications are there plus I can play games on it.

as far as being able to surf the web with 99% proc time going to a single process and not seeing any slow downs... not possible on any GUI OS or GUI front end.

i am sure lynx wouldn't bitch about only getting 1% proc time. but any graphical browser is going to choke with only 1% to share with the system and all the other apps.

The problems with macs are they are too expensive and they are cheap on hardware. To get a descently equipted box :

1.6GHz PowerPC G5
? 1GB DDR333 SDRAM (PC2700) - 2x512
? 2x250GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm
? ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
? SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW)
? Apple Keyboard & Apple Mouse - U.S. English
? Mac OS X - U.S. English
? .Mac Promotional Bundle
? APP for Power Mac (w/ or w/o display) - Enrollment Kit

Subtotal $3,163.95

Thats alot of fucking money ,considering the dual cpu monster win box I could put together for the same money.

Yes you can. Found this link from the Entourage page from M$: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/product...exchangeupdate

You can also connect to an Exchange server using the new Apple Mail client that comes with OS X Panther.

My three main computers are a Windows Box, a mac laptop (iBook) and a Linux box. My Linux box is where I do all my day to day work (e-mail, IM, webstuff, etc...) and all my development work (Java, PHP, C++). The Mac laptop is for when I'm on the road and to use Safari to see how my websites look. The Windows box is for C# development and to see how my sites look under IE. To be honest I loath turning my windows box on. I've been a *nix nut all my life so maybe that's why I like Linux better. I love the virtual desktops and having the ability to have a gazillion other things running simultaniously in the background without slowdown.

you can batch everything in cleaner. email discreet and ask them if the software fits your specs before buying.

note: we only deal with raw, uncompressed minidv video. i've never had to cut compressed video ever.
