Im not sure how they get away with this but one of you should do a little research and see whats going on. 6 months ago I browsed a-z dot com The only domains that were registered were z.com and q.com not x.com When I called network solutions to ask why this is, they said, "you were once able to register a-z domains and z.com and q.com were the first and only two to register before the new policy started which made a-z domains unavaliable to register. If this is so, were did x.com come from? Something is going on.

They got them before the restrictions took place. The other letter domain is:

http://i.net

The two letter ones I cant remember if they all get placed on reserve or only the ones that match foreign TLDs. Regardless that was the reason behind reserved two letter ones. They
are two similar to foreign TLDs.

domain.com.sa

Is how Saudi arabia uses TLD for example.

domain.sa.com

might confuse people..

Regardless if you already owned it you can grandfather it forever

There was another single character dot com that somebody allowed to expire making it reserved where nobody can obtain it. Or maybe I imagined that

Now that I think about it.. the single letter ones have nothing to do with foreign TLDs.

I wonder if McDonalds can lay down 8-9 figures and aquire "m.com" if they really wanted it.

Prehaps they are saving the single letter ones for that purpose alone. The $$$$$$$$$ purpose

Then why was the domain not there when I visted the site. When I spoke with network solutions they said z.com and q.com just got lucky and that they were the ONLY ones that were able to register before the restrictions came into play.

After Bradly registered q.net there was a big debate over
whether single letter domains would break the BIND version
of the day. Jon Postel via IANA reserved all remaining single
letter domains to avoid any breakage. Unfortunately Jon passed
away some 5-6 years ago and NSI just never expired all the
holds even though BIND today would have no problem with
single letter domains.

yeah x.com was bought out by paypal

it use to be a website long ago

But still I wonder if it is possible to acquire a single charater domian? Not that I can afford it. But surely a company like microsoft or mcdonalds can lay down serious $$ for a domain like "M.COM"

There is no law that dictates the restrictions. Or is there? The two character ones where placed on reserve due to the foreign TLDs. But there is no country that reserves a single letter TLD

Its ICANN. They are placed on a special reserved list. No other domains except single letter and some d two letter get placed on the special reserve.

All the others have a common status:

ACTIVE
REDEMTIONPERIOD
PENDTINGDELETE
REGISTAR-HOLD
REGISTER-LOCK
REGISTERY-HOLD
REGISTERY-LOCK
----------------------------------------------------------------------

RESERVED-INTERNET ASSIGNED NUMBERS AUTHORITY

Is the status of the majority of truely elite domains
